My sister Florence, My brother Walter Roy and i were sent to the home when my father could no longer care for us. You did what my father said you would do which was feed and educate us. That you did. You also beat us, allowed the older girls to abuse us during nap time and lied about it all. My brother Roy ran away when he could no longer take the abuse, joined the army and died in Korea at the age of nineteen. I don't know if you have any pictures from this time. I know I was at one reunion sometime in the 50's. Mary Youman James Message Number: 698 - Wednesday, December 7, 2011 17:13:03 EDT - United States

My name is Richard Mallory and my brothers (Robert and Jimmy now deceased) and my sisters (Diana and Rita) were at St. Agatha's from 1958 to 1969. My experiences there, were for the most part, very memorable, and sometimes sweet. I totally remember being bussed all the way to Nyack Jr, High and then to Nyack Senior High for my first two years of high school. My guidance counselor, Donald Polk gave me a lot of things to ponder. Dr. Mellenbach (excuse me if the spelling is incorrect) introduced me to the fine arts as well as giving me some stability in a world turned upside down for my siblings as well as myself. I finally just went to the St. Agatha website and was surprised to find out that there had been a reunion this year. Please keep me apprised of any forthcoming events, as my sisters and I would like to participate and lend a hand. Message Number: 693 - Sunday, November 20, 2011 16:50:38 EDT - United States

My great aunt Carrie and great uncle Joseph were at St Agatha's in 1900. Their names appear on the 1900 US Federal Census but were back with their parents on the 1910 census. I am looking for any information on why they were there, how long they stayed and any other information that may be available. Thank you very much. NANUET HIGH SCHOOL HALL OF FAME: inductions to the program are being held this weekend. One of those honored for his excellence in soccer is our very own St. Agatha brother RAYMOND PEREZ (Wiesel). All five (5) inductees are from the 1960's era. Victor Castro also played in the same team but had to leave for a group home after the first year, otherwise we're sure he would have been among the honored.
Bob Walkley sent out the following message: "If you can, come and support Ray and show Nanuet High school that Soccer and Ray were and are important to us." Raymond has asked Bob Walkley to do him the honor of introducing him. AGENDA: a golf get together Friday afternoon at Blue Hill; a tour of the schools Saturday around 11 am, and then of course the dinner, which begins with cocktail hour at 6:30 pm Saturday at the Elks; followed by dinner at 8 pm, and inductions at 9 pm. Ray will be asked to say a few words (no more than 5 minutes please) when he is inducted, and also anyone Ray chooses to introduce him briefly (2 minutes). Afterward around 10:15 pm everyone goes downstairs for a cocktail to see everyone one last time.
To congratulate Raymond Perez (Ray): rsperez5@verizon.net

I have record of my great grandmother being at St. Agatha's in 1905. Her name was Adelina Orgera. She was born in 1895, which made her approximately 10 yrs old when she was there. She stayed there with a few of her siblings, their last names also Orgera. I'd like to obtain information as to why they were put there or anytning else that may still be there. I felt like getting my records from St. Agathas, only to find out that it was demolished. Luckily I found this website. I couldn't remember faces or names till I went on Ron Lugo's site "girls". To my shock I recognized a few faces. Serene Rehricca, Cecelia Bescardi, and Iris Acosta. Also saw Norma Roman in a reunion photo. If anyone remembers me, please get in touch through my e-mail. I forgot the name of the cottage i was in. It was at the top of a hill, and Sr. Raymond was in charge of us. Didn't like her, as she hit alot, for no reason. I had long dark hair,up to my waist. Was 11,and 12 when I was there; and very skinny. In fact my nick-name was "skinny." hope to hear from someone soon. my e-mail address is: leojo55@yahoo.com bye-josie Message Number: 671 - Thursday, July 21, 2011 11:47:23 EDT - United States

TO MICHAEL PEREZ: This website is a labor of love paid for by personal funds out of Nancy Canfield's pocket, not the New York Foundling or St. Agatha Home itself since that no longer exists. All the information on this website has been provided by Nancy or from Homekids who have contributed their information, photos, videos, guestbook entries, etc. etc. Most of what you see or read here is solely from memory so that we may keep our legacy alive, and we are extremely grateful to Nancy and all those who have participated to make this possible. We have no records. Answers to questions you or anyone else may have are answered by anyone who knows the answer, not any particular person. That is why you were directed to go here or there. The person you mentioned LUCY COLON is a Homegirl, my best friend from high school. She was never a counselor which is why she does not remember you. Perhaps there was another counselor with the same name. I hope you continue to find what you've been searching for, Michael. Please remember that many of us have questions we may never find answers to and that we've come together here on this website and Facebook to support one another and to help ourselves heal. Thanks to many loving Homekids a lot of us have been able to do this and for that we are most grateful. THANK YOU, NANCY, and all of you who provide us with such a beautiful gift. I can remmeber names like Robert,Willie b,Ronald,Donald, Richie,Brian, and one of the counselors named Victor who was there in Cottage 75 also. We were privileged children and probably didn't realize it until later on in life. They gave us the best of everything... a good education and quality of life. I am lost for words when I talk about St. Agatha's. Oh, how I remember the beautiful life and times we had it was such a blessing to us all. Easy to forget our guest-book and use FB instead. But we are not all on FB. Just want to say how wonderful our June 4 reunion was. Perfect weather. Nancy and her Homekids book were there. The book is a must-have for you home. We are so lucky to have a reference book for all to use as a place to review our memories. Don't mind saying I got misty as I looked around the beautifully kept grounds. As I approached the Bell Tower and read some of the bricks, memories flooded my mind. I could see faces and hear voices from so very long ago. Catching up with those who could attend and missing those that couldn't. And all the while grateful for the technology that allowed us to gather at this place at this time, So many made it happen. Nancy, Maria, Ron, Victor and so many more. Maybe again in 2012? Hello HOMEKIDS, it's been about 2 years since I last signed the questbook. I wanted to stay in touch with many homekids again. I have spoken to Reggie about 2 years ago. He was one of the kids that stayed in Mt. Carmel with me. I remember the counselor named Richard, we called him Richie. How is he doing. Keep in touch and I hope that many of you have read the HOME KIDS book that was published several years ago. Did that project with the Bell ever get done and the bricks that were purchased? I was in St. Agatha for a few years while my Mother sewed her wild oats when we first arrive in USA with my two sisters. While my memory is not great and remember very little I am truly trying to reconnect with my St. Agatha family as they were a very important part of my life and the person I have become. I was there from 1967-1960 and remember doing my First Holy Communion as well as my Confirmation at the Church which I understand is gone. Sad. So If you think you know me please reach out as my memory was not great from that time but am trying to reconnect with everyone. Mega-Reunion Notes: Wow..... What a wonderful reunion we had yesterday, many of the planners struggled with should we do this and should we do that.... the decision to allow the event to just create itself was the right one. I loved how people became friends again, how people were guides to each other, brothers & sisters to each other in a very special way. I loved watching how every one who came was welcomed in such a loving way, sister christine & sister Roberts both gave & got the love they truly deserve. I was amazed how few of our alumni did not leave each other to participate in the Nanuet schools activities, (of course this is not a bad thing) in the big picture of things. I liked how the children of "home kids" fit in so easily and had something to contribute. Our trip up to the bell tower was so easy filled with non-stop conversation and joking around...... A special shout -out to my brother freedom who has taught me in his own special way "to open up to people who want to love you." As you know I could do this (writing) for hours but it would not clearly say what is in my heart. I'm so blessed to know all of you. Your all so very special to me. Thank you all for an absolutely wonderful day. Message Number: 646 - Saturday, June 4, 2011 13:14:24 EDT - United States
Hmmm… I seem to recall a Kathy Rooney from back in the day. If you are indeed the same person I believe you to be, then I would certainly like to hear from you again. I'm sure you are as precious today as ever. I'm the guy who had the big fro and nose to boot ">) .. Last I heard, 25yrs or so, you had four wonderful children and was somewhat of a matriarch to a community of kids.. No surprise to me, you've always had he biggest heart and the sweetest disposition. I'm sure that wealth of inspiration you emit spilled over onto those in need of a compassionate ear and voice.. Well, I could go on forever writing about that special little girl from whence i knew, but I'm afraid Barnes and Noble wouldn't have enough shelf space to store your distinctive delight.. Debbie, Yes,I certainly do remember you.For so many years we were in-seperable.Even after we left the home and I would come see you on the Grand Concourse. When I think of you,it brings back the happiest times of my life. There are certain things that even time can not erase. It is a shame that we can not return back to those wonderful moments.I hope you are doing well !! Dear Brothers & Sisters In regards to the BUS TRANSPORTATION to June 4th Reunion entry I posted earlier, please read the following: VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: please be VERY clear as to who will actually be riding the bus by submitting your/their names to me. Those marked "Maybe Attending" are not guaranteed a seat, so please change that to "Attending" once you've decided. Our maximum number of passengers equals 55. Once that number is reached, no more reservations will be made. Please do not show up at Port Authority if your name is not on the list - this must be done BY RESERVATION ONLY. Your donations will be collected upon your arrival. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you there! :-) Likewise, if you sign up for a bus ride and then decide to cancel, please give me a courtesy call at 413-455-1939. Thanks! Theresa I even have pics of you that I sent to Maria to have scanned. You do have a sister name Petra? Not sure of the spelling of her name but I also have a pic of her to . I hope you are all well. I plan on going to the reunion (will be my first) hope you will be there. Take care Message Number: 635 - Friday, May 20, 2011 15:36:19 EDT - United States
My brother, Bernard (Bernie) Devlin and I were at St. Agatha's from 1940 until December 1945.. I read the book "The Home Kids" and purchased copies for my sons. Nancy did a great job. Brought back a lot of memories. I do remember a Sister Lucille, and when I was there we slept in a domitory with white iron beds in rows. I remember one name, Martha Way, from that time. and a Kathleen Hoffman. Message Number: 634 - Thursday, May 19, 2011 17:08:46 EDT - United States

My maiden name that I had up at St. Agatha's was Anna Surace. My sister was Tillie Pozzon, my brothers were Anthony and John Surace. John is no longer with us. He committed suicide at age 54. Thank God the rest of us are still here. We went to the prevention to children home on Schermahorn ST. in Brooklyn first on January 7th of 43 then in May of that year we were transferred to St. Agatha's home in Nanuet, N.Y. where I stayed until January 13th, 1950. My sister and brother left about a year after that, I'm not really sure about Anthony, he went to Spark Hill soon after and John the youngest of us was borderline retarded so they sent him to a home for the retarded, life was too unbearable for him and thus he couldn't handle life on earth anymore but God knows his soul so I believe he's up there with him. Now how do you go about sending our records, do you email the link or will I need to send our address. Thank you kindly, Anna M. HEAR YE! HEAR YE! Our Mega Reunion is just weeks away. SAM CABRERA has brought up a great idea for those who have no transportation or simply don't want to drive to Nanuet: why not charter a bus, all passengers chip in, we meet at a certain location (the Bronx or NYC), and we ride up and back together. Please take a minute and let me get your thoughts on this. While we await the cost, we need to know if anyone's interested. PLEASE RESPOND ASAP. Thank you. P.S. Sam is a driver for the Peter Pan Bus Line and he would be our personal chauffer - how cool is that? Please respond to: mariaagosto67211@yahoo.com or call me at 1-413-455-1939. There's no time to waste, please let me hear from you yesterday. lol :-) Message Number: 631 - Monday, May 16, 2011 10:18:43 EDT - United States

As a young college student and later as a teacher and family man, I will always remember my time at St, Agatha's with great joy and happiness. I now live across the continent but I will always remember the colleagues, children and students that touched my life. It was at St. Agatha that I met my wife of almost 42 years. The union of your spirits, here, has caused Him to remain For whenever two or more of you are gathered in His name There is Love. There is Love.br> (from Paul Stokey, the Wedding Song) We have 181 reservations so far, I hope you are among them. If not, please let me know you are coming. Take a look at the attached list, and if I counted you wrong, or you are not on the list and filled out a form on this website, let me know, I’ll fix it. Or, if you only casually let us know for planning on Facebook, please take a minute to go to the website and fill out the brief form. It’s a big help for planning and keeping everyone informed. Thanks to Rita Rosado and Maria Agosto for their diligence in getting the word out. Remember Field of Dreams? “If You Build It, they will come.” Well, so it is coming to pass! Should have a flyer for you soon. I believe we have about a dozen new pavers ordered to surround the belltower. Thanks to Nidia Cancel for making this happen. We are using any profit from the sale of the bricks to offset the costs of this event. Likewise, if anyone would like to purchase a copy of the book I wrote, Home Kids, the Story of St. Agatha Home for Children, please let me know and I will bring them along. I still donate all the profits from the book to St. Agatha Home Services via the NY Foundling, though sales have been down with the economy. The profits from now until after the reunion will be used toward expenses for the day. A big thank you to RoseAnn Mercado who is arranging this whole day for the Community of Nanuet, of which we were always a part – as well as St. Agatha Home, and helping to make the gym available to us for a get together. None of this would have been possible without the Parks Dept. of Nanuet and the NY Foundling and St. Agatha Home for allowing us access to the gym and the grounds on this special day. Remember, we have to respect all of the current residents whom we are invading. Do not go into the cottages on Duryea, or any of the buildings. They belong to someone else now, and we have our memories. Thanks so much and see you June 4! Regards, Nancy Message Number: 626 - Friday, April 22, 2011 09:20:10 EDT - United States
Peace! My Brothers & Sisters Our MEGA REUNION is less than two months away! Thanks to all of you who have responded by RSVP'ng on our facebook Event notice. It has given us a pretty good idea of how many will attend. Now we need to help Nancy take it a step further to combine these numbers with the numbers here on our mother website and come up with our FINAL TOTAL. This will make it easier to contact everyone at the same time if necessary should the need occur. It will also give you ONE person that you may direct your questions to; and it will help facilitate in the planning of food, drinks, chairs, the program, etc. If you responded only to the Facebook Event notice, please take a minute to respond here on our mother site as well. Simply click on the "Response (RSVP) Form," that is highlighted in yellow on the Main Page and fill out your information there. Most importantly is your name, email address and how many will be attending (you and your guests). Your home address is optional. For any and all questions pertaining to our Reunion, volunteering to help out before or after the Event, please inquire directly from Nancy Canfield at ncanf@san.rr.com. I pray the numbers attending are many and we look forward to seeing your lovely faces on our former sacred grounds to meet your children, grandkids, spouses, friends, etc. God bless and see you there! Thank you, NANCY CANFIELD, for making this Reunion possible. God bless you all. Be there or be square!! lol Love, Maria Agosto & Nancy Canfield Message Number: 625 - Sunday, April 17, 2011 23:16:03 EDT - United States

When will information about the Mega Reunion be available. I plan to attend but need to know what the events are. I need to plan as I am coming from out of town. Living in Minnesota requires you to be hardy as we have had so much snow almost 9 feet this season. My back yard has 5 feet still in it. I live on the Mississippi River so there is a lot of flooding. The second crest will arrive by next week. The snows from the northern parts of Minnesota will start to melt (they got 10 inches over the weekend) and the snow from Western Minnesota (the Minnesota River will join the Mississippi River at the confluence which is 1/2 mile from house. Hope all is well with the "Home Kids". Keep the faith. See you at the "Mega Reunion" Message Number: 622 - Tuesday, April 5, 2011 14:35:42 EDT - United States

I have a brother, Carlos, that I really love. It is true that we at times do not get a long but I love him just the same. he does not really want me to go to the reunion and I know why, but he needs to know that he can't dictate to me certain things. I know that my brother, probably on this occassion is giving me a heads up and trying to warn me and trying to protect me from something and being the knuckle head that I am, I just won't listen to him. I really do love him so much. I know my bother has a lot of potential more than anyone can imagine, and I'm real proud of him for being a hard worker and for the most part always holding his own and being very independent. I saw certain documents and have been receiving lots of emails about meds. I don't appreciate my brother being over medicated or for that matter me either, or for that matter anyone else. an apology is in the offing. and stop medicating people because I was sitting at a table at the 140 th anniversary reunion and saw in the eyes of a young person a deep emptiness that no amount of medication could cover up, and it was medication that was that emptiness. I can speak volumes on this, and I speak now for those who can not speak for whatever reasons. and I could care less about your lessons of rejections and status quo [expletive]. I hope this gives some outlet to those who have been wronged Message Number: 616 - Saturday, March 19, 2011 08:05:33 EDT - United States
TO MICHAEL PEREZ: Hi Michael, you may know this already, but in your interest of finding people from St. Agatha's that were there during your time, I believe that Steve Groark's facebook group will help you reconnect. All you need to do is go to facebook.com and sign up for a free account. You can then enter names of Homekids you're searching for in facebook's search bar or you can join Steve's group and see who is already a member of his group. Many of us Homekids have found each other this way. You can also check thefacebook lists that are already on the stagathahome.org website's main page, first column, that show names of facebook members in the two current groups: (Steve's group: St Agatha Home); my group: St. Agatha Homekids, Nanuet NY/Maria Agosto). Good luck in your search. :-) Message Number: 615 - Friday, March 18, 2011 18:16:10 EDT - United States

"Are you out there?" I sit here quietly and watch the sun set... Thinking of you,but we've never met....... I wonder if you think of me too....... Needless to say,I'm thinking of you..... Wishing to hold you,to see your face.... I'm so alone,I want to leave this place.... You are so right, too good to be true....... I hope you don't mind,me thinking of you.... I believe you were made special for me....... But inside I am worthless,so how could this be.... I'm tired of being so alone and blue..... But I always smile, when thinking of you......... URGENT: OUR BROTHER NEEDS YOU - PLEASE RESPOND: According to Sr. Sheila Finucane and Sr. Christine Rogers, our Agatha brother LAWRENCE P. MEDICI has terminal cancer. Pete has been serving three consecutive life sentences in Virginia and his only contact with the outside world are the letters a few of us Homekids and Sisters of Charity have shared with him throughout the years. After incarceration Pete became a born again Christian, published several religious articles, and has been ministering to the prisoners. Please let us show Pete and the world what Homekids are made of. Whether you know him or not, please send him a card, let him know he's not dying alone. Thank you also for your prayers. Hi My Name is Michael, I'm looking for a Teacher that was in the upper school by the name of miss.a For me, the home was a big part of my life. I spent the young years of my life at Saint Agatha. And was able to meet a lot of kids there and make great friends. I lived in cottage (75), then moved to the cottage 74 . I can remmeber names like Robert,Willie b,Ronald,Donald, Richie,Brian, and one of the counselors named Victor who was there in Cottage 75 also. I must say these were the best years of my life and I am so thankful that whoever decided to place me in the convent did me a great favor. We were privileged children and probably didn't realize it until later on in life. They gave us the best of everything... a good education and quality of life. I am lost for words when I talk about St. Agatha's. Oh, how I remember the beautiful life and times we had it was such a blessing to us all. Have have such wonderful memioers of all the loving Sisters/Nuns, who help take good care of me. well its hard for me to talk about it when I can't find any one I know. I hope we can talk one day on the phone my cell is 646-996-1646
this is me with the father

While doing our Family history became aware of 3 Uncles of mine, who had been place in St Agatha's, the NY census shows them as Inmates 1900. Timothy & Patrick Bourke 4 Twins Tobias Bourke 5 yrs. He left his 3 boys, his Daughter 7 was also placed in NY Children's Home.
May God rest your soul, and secure comfort amongst the many loved ones and friends alike. It is time to remind everyone of the June 4th 2011 ALUMNI-MEGA Reunion. Secondly, I am also writing because at Rudy's Memorial, a lot of people were impressed with the brick installation around the Bell Tower. In order to help coordinate the Mega-Reunion's need to feed the families that will be attending, the idea of having a resurgence of the Brick Fund Raising came to mind. As you all may have noticed, there are many ways to commemorate or dedicate that special person in your life whether it is a brick engraved in your family name or to give thanks and respect to that special nun or counselor, Home Kid or employee that inspired you or made a difference in your life while living at St Agatha's. RSVP Picnic & Brick Order Forms are downloadable from our home page! (signed) Rita |
