Was once a resident of St. Agathas, from a very early age. Learned how to walk, talk, and just grew up to the age of about eight there. Cared for by the most loving person I knew then, a Sister DePaul. May I thank her and all the others, of St. Agathas for all they did for me and my brother. I always felt that the positive experiance of the "home", was just that, "home". As a result, today, my children have also, the memory of a safe, careing and loving "home". I dont really remember a whole about it except that at least my brothers Robert and David and my sisters Sonia and maria were there also. It would be shortlived as we were dispersed to other places later on. I do remember Jim Bryant who was more like a mentor than a counselor.I also like tha fact that it was in the country away from NYC.

Here's a link to a photo of my 1948 boys 8th grade graduation class. I tagged a few names and hoped I spelled them correctly. I think most of the guys in the 1st row had names that started with an "M". If anyone can tell me more names, I'll continue tagging. I'm looking for more photos and will post them as I find them. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=2103622&l=6ae515410f&id=1173373617 Message Number: 588 - Wednesday, December 1, 2010 22:20:52 EDT - United States
I attended St. Agatha from '44 and graduated the 8th grade in '48. Then, although I lived in Sunnyside, Queens, I commuted to Cardinal Hayes HS in the Bronx. I served in the USAF for 4 years during the Korean war and thanks to my previous high quality academic background from St. Agatha and Hayes I was accepted on a full academic scholarship to the Cooper Union School of Architecture. I have done many things, travelled around then settled down on the Gulf Coast of Alabama for the past 27 years. Prior to Alabama I spent 25 years in the Bay Area of California. Adding to my profession as an architect, I also studied and became a USCG Master for 20 years and captained a sailing charter boat. My beautiful wife of 39 years, Carol and I have also been developing a wildlife habitat, the Biophilia Nature Center in Elberta, Alabama. www.biophilia.net for the past 21 years. I have many memories of St Agatha's Home, some happy and some sad. I remember some kind Sisters including Sr. Raymond, But I really remember Coach Tom Malony who was an inspiration to us boys. He was kind and tough and just. I remember having a crush on Anastasia Murphy and I remember Steve Way, John Diaz, Jimmy Gillespie, just to name a few of my buddies. I am presently searching out old photos including my Graduation class of 1948..... If there is anyone that remembers, please say hi....My brother who left in 53 is Richard Saas and someone please tell Bob McManus that Marilyn Saas was my dear departed sister (Feb. 26, 1938-Jan. 26, 1994). Love and Peace to all...... Message Number: 587 - Tuesday, November 30, 2010 15:40:48 EDT - United States

I am searching for anyone who knew my mother DENISE SCHUBERT. She didnt attend St Aggies but she hung out there alot with friends. Denise was (caucasion)and 16yrs old in 1968. She went to Nanuet HS, class of 1970 but she didnt graduate. She had some friends named Diane Lennon, Lois Ryerson. I dont know much about Denise because I never met her, and she passed away before I had a chance to meet her. She hung out with/dated some guys from St Aggies and I am searching for anyone who knew her or might know who she dated because one of those guys might be my birth father. I havent been able to find him because Denise didnt leave much information behind about him. She described him as 6 ft tall, african american (possibly puerto rican) , muscular build, played basketball, ran track.. played guitar, and went into the army in the fall of 67 or 68. He went to school in Rockland Co but I dont know which one. His name may have been John - last name possibly Cooper. Im not sure if that is correct or not. Also, he may have been from Haverstraw, NY. Since I missed the chance to meet my parents , I am hoping someone there knew her, or remembers meeting her so I can get information on my father. Please contact me at vonirae2@aol.com or on facebook. Message Number: 584 - Tuesday, November 23, 2010 19:43:56 EDT - United States

I remember many things about St. Agatha and I will mention just one. I had a crush on Anastasia Murphy and I gave her a silver colored necklace with a cross. I don't remember if she acknowledged it, but I was pulled aside a few days later by ???? and given the third degree about stealing it from the church in Nanuet. One of the boys sold it to me. I would not divulge that, but was finally acquitted on my own recognizance. I wonder if darling Anastasia ever got it back. If you were unable to attend the memorial for Rudy Polk on 9/25, you can share the wonderful day through the videos that were taken and shared on this site. Many thanks to Victor Castro, Ron Lugo, Maria Agosto, Tommy Dunphy, and Rita Rosado for their photo contributions, and to all of you who contributed memories. And let's not forget our silent partner, Peter Feliciano, for the loving care he gives to our website. On the same day as the memorial, the refurbished bell tower rescued from the admin building, was installed at it's permanent home on Duryea Lane. Like the cemetary, this is ours, forever. After these events, there was a wonderful reception in the gym. Behind the scenes of all of this was the St. Agatha Alumni and friends. I know he hates being singled out but he passion of Eddie Miranda was in it all. It was heartwarming to see you all. If you were absent, you were missed. special thanks to all of the sisters who attended. When I arrived at St. Agatha Home in 1965, Sr. Maureen, Sr. Joanne, Sr. Robert, Sr. Christine, Sr. Alexander, Sr. Raymond, they were all there. And they were all there in 2010! The grounds where our old buildings, our home for awhile, once stood, are now a beautiful park that we can still share because it is open to the public. We have our memories, we have our websites and facebooks, our videos and photos, and we have each other. Let's stay connected. With love, Nancy Canfield Message Number: 569 - Saturday, October 16, 2010 00:04:41 EDT -United States

http://lajiribilla-habana.cuba.cu/2010/n491_10/491_34.html since my arrival at st. agatha's was near the date of che's death, and since, unfortunately, my last name is the same as one of the betrayers of the cuban revolution who lives here in the United States, i look at things sometimes as others might interpret as no basis in fact. today, i remember the revolutionary hero as my mentor and my hero. i consider myself a child of che, and a child of the revolution and fidel, and to my birth parents. i consider myself as having the spirit of freedom lying somewhere on those prestine and precious grounds of the former st. agatha's home, and to the many people at st. agatha's home that cared about me enough to teach me a few things about life as a little kid because they knew as an adult i would be confronted with certain abominable challenges. thanks to certain kind people at nanuet high school. thanks for tony curtis and his wife jill, and all the great american actors and actress, and musicians that filled an empty space during terror trails and tribilations, thanks for the doors and jim morrison, and mumia and all the anti war activist and peace activist that made live for me bearable and tolerable. on this 53rd anniversary of the death of my beloved hero i wish all who find themselves worry and fearfull to hold steadfast and do not cave into gloom and doom . create art, music, poetry, movies anything ... use your brains and talent, do not let them degenerate Message Number: 565 - Wednesday, October 6, 2010 15:57:43 EDT - United States

I remember St.Agatha's when the switchboard was the big black table with wires that had to pulled out of one hole and put into another inorder for calls to be connected. I have these weeds that grow on my property that remind me of st. agatha's-These weeds grow on a stem, are round like a marble and are filled with prickly/thorny spikes all around them that stick to your pants in bunches if you brush pass them-As annoying as these things are i love it how it draws me back to the days at St.Agatha's. RUDY POLK MEMORIAL SERVICE
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2010 WHERE: ST. AGATHA CEMETERY TIME: 11:00 A.M. SHARP Dear Brothers & Sisters, Please read carefully as a few things have changed since the first announcement. PARKING We will meet at the St. Agatha Cemetery (not the Gymnasium) to begin the graveside ceremony at 11:00 a.m. sharp. Auxiliary police will be available to show you the designated parking areas (gymnasium parking lot and former boys yard, etc.). It would be ideal if you could leave your cars parked and walked up to the cemetery, but if this is not possible for you, then please remember that parking on Duryea Lane may present a bit of a challenge. We're expecting around 200 or so to attend, so please arrive early and give yourself ample time. You won't want to miss the bittersweet gun salute by the U.S. Marines Guard or the Taps performance. Upon completion of the graveside ceremony, please return to the Gymnasium where the remainder of the Memorial Service will take place. The service will include an "open microphone" for those of you wishing to express your thoughts, sentiments and happy memories about Rudy. Please keep your speech up to 3 minutes in length in order to accommodate everyone - you may want to prepare this in advance. Refreshments will be available afterwards. SPECIAL NOTE: Please remember that the former five girls' cottages are now private property that houses special clients. Although we are welcome to visit the Bell Tower in that area, please keep in mind that we are gracious guests who will respect their privacy. TO RAIN OR NOT TO RAIN! Pray that it doesn't rain, but carry an umbrella just in case!! DRIVING DIRECTIONS Please take the Palisades Parkway North or the 287 North - both take you to Rockland County. A HUGE THANK YOU TO EDDIE MIRANDA, BARRY DONAHUE, NIDIA CANCEL, THE SISTERS, RUDY's FAMILY AND ALL OTHERS WHO'VE MADE THIS SERVICE POSSIBLE. SEE YOU ALL ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 25th!!!! :-) Any questions, please contact Maria Agosto 413-455-1939 or mariaagosto67211@yahoo.com (On behalf of the Rudy Polk Memorial Service Planning Committee) Message Number: 555 - Wednesday, September 15, 2010 11:02:57 EDT - United States

TO JAMES REGAN: How sad that your experience at St. Agatha Home was as you described. Unfortunately, even Heaven has its undesirables, I believe. It is my hope that you find some peace of mind and comfort in knowing that we understand your pain. Many of us have joined forces through this website, Facebook and other sources, to share both good times and not so good times, but mainly to celebrate and strengthen the bond we formed with one another as children. I hope you find some reconnections here and there to help you remember the smiles and lessen the tears. God bless you, James. My time in the home was both Happy and sad. I was abused by a few people up there but there were also many who I still love and thank for the kindness they showed me. The home was a sad place to grow up sometimes and I don't think most of the staff really understood that. My sister and three brothers were also up there. I think 11 Hayden was the worst of the whole place, a den of child abusers. Those people had absolutely no compassion for any who walked into that cottage. My favorite place was the Haverstraw group home and some of the staff that worked there. This is still very painful for me so I will leave it at that for now. Goodbye and GOD bless all of my home brothers and sisters...James Message Number: 545 - Tuesday, August 3, 2010 15:20:28 EDT - United States

Subject: THE BELL IS HUNG!
Hello again, friends, family and alumni.
Today we can finally say... The bell is hung... That's right it sits on a platform on the "A" frames with the rope wheel attached inside the bell tower. This Monday August 2, 2010 was a very long day... full of unexpected challenges... Under the direction of Ed Miranda and a lot of visitors who made suggestions and one who offered real help, we can say today the "bell is hung". Now let's be clear: the hoist frame still needs to be taken down; the floor needs to be swept and cleaned. The nicks & dings from the two days of work need to be repainted. Then & only then can we say it is truly done. I'm very happy and grateful that Ed called me to help. There is a great satisfaction in turning a dream into reality. Completing this project is a wonderful gift. (See the pictures in our group's photo album) Be well, Victor TO EDDIE MIRANDA & VICTOR CASTRO: Words cannot express the joy going through many Homekids' hearts as we witness the reunion of "our" Bell with its proper home, the Bell Tower. THANK YOU for sharing this precious event with those of us far from Home. (Maria) Message Number: 544 - Thursday, July 29, 2010 22:04:42 EDT - United States
I taught the students from cottage 150 when I first got there, taught vocational skills at the Cafe, was a gym teacher and art teacher. I loved working at St. Agatha's and I felt as though I had a lot of success with many students, especially Elizabeth Carter. I baked with my students and we donated our proceeds to 9/11 victims. We put on two beautiful art shows showcasing the many talented students. I have many fond memories of both students and staff. I would love to hear from you! To send Father a birthday card: Msgr. Eugene E. Oliverio / Sunrise Senior Living at Fleetwood 500 N. Columbus Ave. / Mt. Vernon, NY 10552 Message Number: 540 - Wednesday, July 14, 2010 19:36:17 EDT - United States
FR. OLIVERIO'S 80th birthday is JULY 18th. A group of us are getting together at his facility in Mt. Vernon on SATURDAY, AUGUST 7th to celebrate, albeit a few weeks late. If you are interested in joining us, please contact our visit coordinator, Isabel Perez-Cruz at coffey14@aol.com or at isabel.cruz@ssa.gov - Please do so as soon as possible, since we need to make reservations in advance in order to get the community room. Depending on who goes, carpooling is possible, if you let us know in time. These precious visits to Father are very spiritual and uplifting for him as well as for all who attend. Although he's holding out, there is no denying his mental health is slowly diminishing. However, through it all, he is still the loving, kind, and wonderful man we've always known, just a lot quieter and slower. We hope to hear from YOU. God bless. I am just finding out about Rudy. Rudy was awesome and intimidating. I was in DePaul when I first meet Rudy. Everyone respected him. He knew how to handle us at different levels and attitudes we had. I do remember him bitting his index finger. I last meet him at the day they had the opening of the grounds and the farewell to St. Agatha. Rudy, Thank you for being there as a Father in those most needed days in St.Agatha. You've touched many hearts. Message Number: 538 - Sunday, July 11, 2010 12:55:44 EDT - United States

I am writing on behalf of my deceased dearly loved father. He was there at St. Agatha's starting in 1918. He didnt talk much about his life there. He was 69 when he died of heart problems, in 1979.His name was odd and we since found out his nationality was different than what he was told. I know this was along time ago. Does anyone know of him. Boyla Joseph Grad was his name. He was blind in one eye, but I dont know at what age that happened. it was some kind of football injury. He was such a good man and cherished family. My thoughts on Rudy Polk. Rudy was the Dad that I never had. He was responsible for giving me my first Job. He would give me an allowance to clean the kitchen in DePaul on Saturdays. He allowed me to go off the Home grounds to make money raking leaves and cleaning nearby residential houses.I used the money to take correspondance courses by mail. One of the courses was Electronics. I am employed today and have been since I left the home in the Electronics field thanks to Rudy. Rudy's effect on my life runs deep like the roots of a tree. We truly lost one of the great pillars of St.Agatha Home. I am so glad I got to spend some time with Rudy at the last two Reunions and the Dedication of the grounds. Rudy I love you and thank you for everything you did for me and my brother Benito. You will be dearly missed but never forgotten. R.I.P my friend. RUDY POLK ... the name alone has always brought smiles to many who remember him as a humorous character ... famous for biting his folded index finger when he wanted to put the fear in your heart or to make his point known. I last saw Rudy at the St. Agatha grounds commemoration sitting under a canopy and telling folks about Nancy Canfield's book. We were so happy to see each other, shared updates, hugged and chatted a while. Sadly he lost his battle with cancer and a heart condition on Monday, June 21st, but his name, smiles and delightful humor will always remain with us. IT IS WITH DEEP REGRET THAT WE ANNOUNCE THE PASSING OF OUR BELOVED AGATHA SISTER ZONIA MALDONADO: Zonia was born on March 14, 1955. She was in St. Agatha's 1960-1970. She graduated from Roosevelt HS in The Bronx and later from Nursing School. She battled Crohn's Disease from the age of 15 and finally lost her battle yesterday, June 8th, from complications associated with it. Zonia was multi-talented, she could sew, draw, crochet, cut hair and was an excellent baker and cook. Most of all she loved her family and above all else she loved her "miracle baby" -- her daughter Sheena as she was told she would never have children. She is survived by her daughter Alicia Sheena Sanchez Maldonado, 26 years old, her sister Frances Maldonado Mercado and the rest of the family. (No information yet on Zonia's memorial services. However, if one is announced I will post it here on our mother website as well as on Facebook and MySpace) Message Number: 527 - Monday, June 7, 2010 23:42:47 EDT - United States

Hi My Name is Michael,
I'm looking for a Teacher that was in the upper school by the name of miss.a
For me, the home was a big part of my life. I spent the young years of my life at Saint Agatha. And was able to meet a lot of kids there and make great friends. I lived in cottage (75), then moved to the cottage 74 . I can remmeber names like Robert,Willie b,Ronald,Donald, Richie,Brian, and one of the counselors named Victor who was there in Cottage 75 also. I must say these were the best years of my life and I am so thankful that whoever decided to place me in the convent did me a great favor. We were privileged children and probably didn't realize it until later on in life. They gave us the best of everything... a good education and quality of life. I am lost for words when I talk about St. Agatha's. Oh, how I remember the beautiful life and times we had it was such a blessing to us all. Have have such wonderful memioers of all the loving Sisters/Nuns, who help take good care of me.
well its hard for me to talk about it when I can't find any one I know. I hope we can talk one day on the phone my cell is 646-996-1646
this is me with the father

Hello Home kids & who ever reads this note. The alumni association still continues to exist with the help of a few really strong & devoted people. I recently visited the site of the saved St. Agatha's bell tower. It really looks good standing there. Tall, painted, with it's circular path and white painted benches. New bushes and trees line the area. The whole thing gives you a feeling that the St. Agatha's we all new and loved will still be there for our children and all who are interested in the future. Every time I visit I get to see Eddie Miranda whole is still employed by the "home". We spoke about the last part of the project. Putting in a frame to hold up the bell... It is Spring and this is a good time to get it done. So we will continue the work and hope that all of you will look forward to taking some time out of your lives to visit when the site is dedicated. Thank you all for continuing to keep this dream of St. agatha's alive. Victor Message Number: 518 - Thursday, April 1, 2010

Hello HOME KIDS. It's been awhile since I logged in. I will do my best to get on FB. I just celebrated my older brother's birthday this weekend in NYC. All five of us was in St.Agatha from 71-74. We spoke to everyone in the party about times in St.Agatha. It is just something that will remain in our lives forever. I told them about the first night in St.Agatha how my older brother calmed me down from crying waking up in the middle of the night for 2 hours. I had no idea how we went from being in the classroom mid day, taken out by CPS and driven to St.Agatha in just a matter of hours. Imagine the shock, it took us all by surprise. Reggie and I made contact. We both were in Mount Carmel in 71 or 72. Message Number: 516 - Saturday, March 13, 2010

A heart felt condolences to the family of Ray!!! Ray was our welcoming party to the bronx when St. Agathea's opened up the group home in the Bronx. We played hooky in his Dad's house. I believe I got my first kiss there. Thanks Ray. Oh yeah, and ROSIE too! Nothing but great memories! I followed Ray's foot steps and ran the ball for the Dark Horse too. Not as well as Ray and Johnny. I was slow as molasses! But what Fun. Ray was super cool and always a good friend. Only wished I would have stayed in touch. I do have pictures I dug up from 1974. Love Ya Ray thanks for being a friend. And I'll see ya when I get there!!! Tommy Message Number: 511 - Saturday, February 6, 2010

I am very saddened by the passing of Raymond Maldonado, I met Raymond in 1964 in Savio, We shared the same dorm the same age he played football with me as a running back with Johnny Velez. We in Savio under Jim Bryant were a very tight knit group of kids. We did everything together. He was kind soft spoken and probably one of my closest friends. He was already in the home when I got there and made my transition into St Agathas smooth at a time when I felt a little afraid.I will always remember his cool ways he was a real people person. God bless him his family and all the kids whose lives he touched from Savio to 13 Hayden. I can say that I'm going to miss him but I've been missing him since 1970 when we said goodbye and parted ways. Please say a prayer for him and his family because he is a tremendous loss for us all. Thank you Raymond for all the good times, Message Number: 509 - Wednesday, February 3, 2010
