Happy Holidays to all HOME KIDS. Is there a connectin between Margaret Halowen and Hellen Troffo? That would be excellent. What ever happen to Richie the counselor? Here is a poem that reminds me of St. Agatha "It Makes a Difference" A well-known author and poet was working and vacationing on the southern coast of Spain.
One morning very early, he was walking along the beach; the sun was just rising. While enjoying the beauty about him, he glanced down the beach and saw a lone figure dancing about. Fascinated by this other person celebrating the day that was about to dawn, he moved closer. As he came nearer, he realized that the young man was not dancing, but in one graceful movement was picking objects up from the beach and was tossing them out into the sea. As he approached the young man, he saw that the objects were starfish. "Why in the world are you throwing starfish into the water?" "If the starfish are still on the beach when the tide goes out and the sun rises higher in the sky, they will die," replied the young man as he continued tossing them out to the sea. "That's ridiculous! There are thousands of miles of beach and millions of starfish. You can't believe that what you are doing could possibly make a difference!" The young man picked up another starfish, paused thoughtfully and remarked as he tossed it out into the waves, "It makes a difference to this one." Good to hear the names of youth. I have recently been back in touch with Maria Agosto. While I was a "townie" I lived close by, Park Ave. If I wasn't going through Walkers Field I would take the long way and go up Convent Rd. I would often go to the dorms and dance and cut up with the kids. As a matter of fact the name Barbara Tribocki sounds very familiar. Barbara, if you talk to Maria she will tell you I found the "Fountain of Youth", she tells me I never changed. I still look the same as I did in school. How sweet of her. I am also wondering about Harry Vega, Candida Vega, Frances Moldanado, and a few others. I can't recall all their names. I graduated in 1967 but usually hung out with people a little older at times. I learned early, people are people. By the way that candy store was called Boggianno's. He was a bit impatient at times with us kids but I realize now how we kids could be too. Does anyone but me remember the Library next door and Johnson Bros. Stationary store? Then there was the Bowling Alley and The Nanuet Diner on 59 where I got my first full time job? From what I hear the old town has changed a lot. Well I have bored you guys enough with my trip down memory lane, your turn now. Write soon. Donna Message Number: 498 - Wednesday, December 2, 2009 20:36:17 EDT - United States

Hi My Name is Michael,
I'm looking for a Teacher that was in the upper school by the name of mis.a miss.a
For me, the home was a big part of my life. I spent the young years of my life at Saint Agatha. And was able to meet a lot of kids there and make great friends. I lived in cottage (75), then moved to the cottage 74 . I can remmeber names like Robert,Willie b,Ronald,Donald, Richie,Brian, and one of the counselors named Victor who was there in Cottage 75 also. I must say these were the best years of my life and I am so thankful that whoever decided to place me in the convent did me a great favor. We were privileged children and probably didn't realize it until later on in life. They gave us the best of everything... a good education and quality of life. I am lost for words when I talk about St. Agatha's. Oh, how I remember the beautiful life and times we had it was such a blessing to us all. Have have such wonderful memioers of all the loving Sisters/Nuns, who help take good care of me.
well its hard for me to talk about it when I can't find any one I know. I hope we can talk one day on the phone my cell is 646-996-1646
this is me with the father

Comments: In addition, my dad, Richard Joseph Wood, was placed at St. Agatha's when he about 4 years of age, after his mother died in 1922. I think he was there from 1924 until he was 18. Also, my uncle, Edward, who was a year or two older was at St. Agatha's as well. Is it possible to get my dad's records for genealogy purposes? My dad is now deceased and he knew nothing of his family. There may be some tidbit of information to help me in my search. You may contact me at the e-mail above or my phone - 269 823-3893. Thank you for any help you may provide. Elizabeth Joan Wood Campbell P., S. I have a picture of my grandfather, dad and uncle, in front

I'm 91 years of age now. I was a good student, never was in trouble with the nuns, probably because I was frightened to death of them. It took a long time to recognize that they had a difficult time of it and did a remarkable job considering, When my father took me out and placed me in PS 11, NYC, within a brief period of time they allowed me to skip a grade. Briefly, I went on to become an Art Director at a large ad agency, raised 4 great kids, all of whom are successful men and women (2 boys, 2 Girls) and my wife and I are retired and living in Bucks County. While at St. Agatha's, My name was McLane. That's another story. Cordially Joseph C. McDonagh Message Number: 464 - Monday, August 17, 2009 18:46:14 EDT

Hi Mildred Roldan. I remember You, Louie, Henry, Jerry, Danny and I am not sure why i do not remember so much Richie. I may not recognize you guys if I saw you today. But you, Henry, jerry, Danny are so clear a memory. when you were like 10. My family consisted of Elba and Carlos(matos)and Tommy and Rosie Perez. You and I were in the Annex together and probably shared one of the 4 bedrooms upstairs and that doesn't include the 2 bathrooms and Sr.Charles's room. Jerry and I were in the same grade and several years later we were in the same grouphome in Spring valley. I have fond memories of the Roldan's. I last saw Jerry at a club in NYC-may have been studio 54..around 1978-79. Please Say hello to them all. I even remember your father coming to visit you all. hope to here from you soon. I hope they are well. (Thanks Nancy Canfield) and to all who continue to make this possible. Message Number: 461 - Friday, August 7, 2009 11:11:42 EDT
Hello John Wheeler! Yes, I do remember you from DePaul cottage. It is alway good to hear from one of our not so distanced past. I am sure someone who visits this site will fill you in on the current status of Regina Gomez. Do you remember her St Agatha's School graduation picture, which revealed her true beauty she had so successfully conceal under that projected rough exterior? Well, take care of yourself. May the force be with you! Message Number: 460 - Tuesday, August 4, 2009 11:21:46 EDT

Hi, I am John Wheeler and I was at St. Agathas for approximately two years. I think the name of my cottage was St. Vincent De Paul, It was the middle cottage between Loyola and Seaton Hall. Sr. Kevin was our House Sister and Rudy was our counselor. I recognized many of my friends in the 1965 Class Photo and even a picture of me, Identified only by my first name, John in row 3, #5. I have thought of the friends I made in St. Agathas' often, especially Regina Gomez, and have wondered what had become of everyone. I remember almost every person in our class photo and hope life has treated everyone well. I really enjoyed my trip through this time capsule and thank everybody that helped to make this site a reality. God Bless all the Home Kids and especially the Sisters and Lay Adults that helped to make St. Agathas our home when we so desperately needed one. **UPDATE ON FR. OLIVERIO: As of May, Father was placed in Assisted Living in Mt. Vernon, NY. I'm in frequent touch with his sister Esther who says there continues to be progressive notable changes in his mental and physical health. Because they are so close she is having a very difficult time dealing with Father's condition. Please keep them both in your prayers and if you'd like to contact either one of them, or to drop a note or card, please drop me an email and I'll be more than happy to assist you. My next visit to Father will be around mid-August if anyone in the area is interested in joining me and a few other Homekids. Stay blessed. Hello everyone, Blessings to you and your loved ones. I haven't been to this site for a long time. It's good to see the new people who have connected with loved ones from the past. I also read that a few people are trying to figure out how to get there pictures to this site. Here are some ways to do it. The simplest is to bring your pictures to a photo shop and ask them to scan them into a computer photo program and download them on to a CD. You can also ask a friend to do this if they have a scanner and a photo software program. You can then put them into your computer and e- mail them to the site. or send an e-mail to the brothers and they will assist you with an address to mail them out. There are many photo's out there and having them in one place will benefit all homekids. I hope this has helped. I also want to ask if anybody has heard anything about the progress of the Bell Tower Project? Have they started yet? Psssssssst Pass the word, ask the Question... Be well Victor. Hello brothers and sisters, if you wish to email me and talk about the home and good times please do so. I also have many photos when I was a child in 12 hayden and in Gonzoga and would like to identify the other people in these photos. I would like to post on St. Agatha website. Is there a way this can be done? I do not want to use facebook or other website methods. I want everyone to view the photo on the St. Agatha web site where it belongs. Please advise. Was in 11 Hayden had many good memories of that place. Pretty rough as we get older. Remembering being away from our families and not being like other kids who were with theirs. Now I get all nostalgic about it and often use goodle maps to get a good look at the old place. So many kids have passed through there and never looked back whereas us rare few do. Remembering Michael… I remember when “ABC” was easy as 123. When “I Found That Girl”. Yes, my “Mama’s Pearl”. So I thought! Shortly thereafter, advising that same girl to “Stop The Love you Save” for it may be your own. “I Don’t Know Why I Love You” I recall professing to her on bended knees. Maybe it was that “My Forever Came Today” when she walked into my life. Truth be told, I even sang out “I’ll Be There”, “I Want You Back” and that I am “A Fool For You”. Thought I was her “Sugar Daddy”, then I thought “Maybe Tomorrow” she’ll come back to my arms. Did she listen? Only the Heart be told. Well, “She’s Out Of My Life” But hey, remember that was back in grade school. Can anyone relate? Yes I remember when many a childhood interests seemed to bare little consequence or gain in the grand scheme of things. Simplicity was the norm of the day. Just a child lost in the games of play. Guess one can “Never Say Goodbye” through the eyes of a looking glass. Thanks Michael! Despite the shortcomings, life has a bit more to be taken from and appreciated because of your contributions. Light a torch, “Heal The World”. For this, we owe you a debt of gratitude. We can only hope it translate in making this a better place for you and for me! God Bless! I want to express my gratitude for this site. I have reconnected with Christine Santiago who I knew when I was about 10 yrs old and she about 6 yrs at the home. Then she came to live in the same group home in the Bronx when she was about 13 yrs old, for about a year. Then one day she just disappeared from the group home. I have dreamt about Christine a few times over the years, wondering if she were alive and well. It has been nearly 30 years and there she was on your guestbook page. words can't explain. Thanx to those incredible "brothers and sisters" from Saint Agatha who were able to identify the people in the photo, Graduating Class 1965. Because of you, I was able to find my long lost sister Suzanne. It is she, not Cecilia, who is in the photo. Still, thank all of you very much for finding my sister. I couldn't even recognize her until some of you helped. Message Number: 441 - Thursday, June 18, 2009 02:38:13 EDT [IP = 204.238.72.224] -United States

I like that samll touch of using the Flags. Who can relate to the following story: Visiting Sundays were every other Sunday when I was there. If your parents did not show up, then it would be a month before you saw them if they showed up. I remember at Mt. Carmel they would have all of us little boys all dressed up after church and lunch and wait for the exciting phone call to come from central "Send Robert and Willie down, their parents are here" but for me those were few in between. The sad part was when you waited for hours "like all of us did, unless you were one with no parents" "It was implied that you would not get visitors so you could go play and not wait until close to visiting hours were at hand." what would go on in our little minds. We would sit there for 3-5 hours, come to find out that great phone ring was not for you and that excitiment and pounding in your little heart would just fade away. You would go change clothes, not knowing why they did not come. "What did I do wrong?" play and get ready for dinner. Now use your imagination and finish this story until the next visiting Sunday. What could of been going on in a little child's mind for the next two weeks. Smile Message Number: 438 - Sunday, June 14, 2009 15:03:57 EDT [IP = 75.202.39.7] -United States
Hello everyone, My cousin Jose read my story on this site and he told me that he cried when he read it. He continued to explore the site and read many of the stories written by former "home kid" and he was very moved. He never knew the story behind my brother and I going to St.Agatha's. Anyway he purchased Nancy's book for me and I just finished reading it. Thank you Nancy for your wonderful book. It was great learinging about the history of St. Agatha's and the story of New York. My daughter now wants to read the book and hopefully one my grand daughter will read the book too. I agree with Robert Garcia that our story should be told in a movie. So many people would relate to it and enjoy it. I feel so honored to be a part of this so special group. I love you all. How are you HOME KIDS? I read all of the messages daily. I'm curious of how many states or countries there are that HOME KIDS live in. I have seen Puerto Rico, California, Texas, and so many more. Some day there will be a time where a mini-series will be written, published or viewed on T.V. just about the HOME KIDS and St. Agatha. I am originally from New York City, Puerto Rican decendent. Now representing Texas. Message Number: 435 - Wednesday, June 10, 2009 13:09:58 EDT [IP = 68.195.185.223] -United States
My memories of St. Agatha's are very vague and sad. I was only 5 years old at the time, my sister Frances was 6 years old, and of school age. Therefore, we were separated. It was only on rare occasions when our mother visited that I got to spend time with my sister. Such were the rules back then. It's good to read these comments and know that most other children were happy there. I found St. Agatha in a most miraculous way back in 1989, visited the grounds and became alumni, but find it difficult still. I came across Nancy Canfield's book, 'Home Kids' in an another miraculous way, bought one for both of us. We cherish it because its our only link to those years. My sister has one picture with other children in it, I'll try to figure out how to get it on this site. Message Number: 434 - Wednesday, June 10, 2009 02:53:13 EDT [IP = 67.181.41.39] -United States

I'm writing on behalf of my grandfather in law, Joseph Travers, 85. He was at St Agatha's since he was a year old and for the following 16 years thats where he stayed. He tells us stories from time to time and we are actually going to visit tomorrow so he can show his grandson and myself where he lived for so many years. The funny thing is he stayed in the area and worked at lederles and retired from there and owned his first home in the area as well. I'm unsure of why he was put there as there are multiple stories concerning this but unfortunately he is begining the process of alhemizers so he remembers from early on rather than now. Thank you for putting this website up, he will have great pleasure in going through it with us to see all the history. I never stayed at St. Agatha's but my father was one of the counselors, I guess that's what you call them, in one of the cottages for the older boys that were nearing 18, I think around 1975-1978 on the weekends. My dad would take me and my younger brother (who the guys all called Evans) with him there on Saturday mornings, early! I learned how to play pool there, we went with the guys to Great Adventure, one of them even braided my hair so tight it took my mom two days to get it all out!! We also went to Hi Tor pool. We spent alot of time at St.Agatha's, I'm sure we were more pains in the butt then anything, but my family was very close with Alessandro Echeverria, I know he was one of 9 kids, he had a sister Olga, brothers Angel and maybe Jesus. We moved out of state and Alex came a few times to visit. His last visit was around 1994, my mother passed away shortly after that and Alex seemed to take it hard. He called our house the other day, but did not leave a number, and our caller id wasn't working. I also know that Alex worked at St. Agatha's as a counselor at a cottage in 1994. I was distressed to know that St. Agatha's closed down, it held alot of fond memories for our whole family. I am hoping someone out there knows where he is or if he reads this himself he contacts me thru my email. Message Number: 429 - Tuesday, June 2, 2009 08:19:19 EDT [IP = 208.188.3.80] -United States
Lugo, you have an excellent way with words. I log on to see your choice of words. Good Day HOME KIDS, it's been awhile since I have logged on. How is the BELL coming along? I plan to be at the get together in October. I saw a program on T.V. called The Mighty Mights on PBS. I recommend watching it. It will relate to many of us HOME KIDS. Some of the documentary hit it right on the nose with many of us. As time goes by, I plan to continue with updating my Family Tree and share my stories with my 3 grand children. I hope to see many of you in October. FYI, you know that Mt. Carmel is still active. One day read the story on how St.Agatha acguired Mt. Carmel, one of the oldest structure and still standing. COMING SOON!... Good day everyone! First off, those of us at the Literary Wall of Reflection (Rita, Maria and I) would like to thank you all for visiting our site. It speaks volumes when the benefits of sharing translate into an uplifting for all brethren alike. Needless to say, it brings us great joy to be able to touch such a solemn vein. It’s within that vein; we proudly continue to echo a reflective ambiance thereof with selections of poetic gesture from our P.O.P.E. (Palette of Poetic Expression) Gallery. This latest installment at our site is the birth of a new forum indicative of some of the material we’d like to share with you in future presentations. Here’s a quick summary of this upcoming exhibition. The Selected works of poetry were graciously contributed and written by; Rita Villa Rosado (RVR), Ray Velez, Maria Agosto and I. Nearly all background images used for these pieces (creatively touched up in Photoshop) are of photos I took over the course of about 5 years. The remaining backdrop images I created for visual complimentary affect. If you’d like to share some of your work as well, we certainly encourage you to do so throughout. All that’s needed is “The Pen” in you! Thanks again, and drop by soon! God Bless! Message Number: 424 - Friday, May 15, 2009 21:57:43 EDT [IP = 67.87.182.209] -United States

For me, the home is a big part of my life. I spent the young years of my life at Saint Agatha. And was able to meet a lot of kids there. I lived in cottage (15) with guy's like Jose, jr, Bill, Carlos, Raymond, I played football for Jim Bryant team the Saints. Played softball with Don Cooper team, and played basketball for Nanuet high school & Saint Agatha. We use to hang at the teen center and dance. And talk with the girls. Sometimes we would break night just so security would chase us that was the best of time..I'm greatful for those before me. I have not seen anyone from my time there well a few, I only hope that they are doing well and ok. Thank you Saint Agatha. You will all ways be a part of my grouth. Over the years, during our visits with Sister, we have heard mention of the other babies she is in contact with, and we thought it would be a good time for a small reunion of sorts. We are planning a special luncheon with Sister in May. Wed love to have you with us. So, we asked Sister to pass this note on to you. Back again!...Maria Agosto and I are excited to announce the official premier launching of our new St. Agatha HomeKids website referred to as The Literary Wall of Reflection. Everything is slated to be up and running on MONDAY APRIL 20th. I would certainly be remiss in not acknowledging all those that have contributed their personal stories, photos and childhood experiences thus far. The body of work submitted by you ultimately remains the bloodline of this site]s survival and we thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. I would also like to thank the the yarn that sews the fabric, notably, Maria the Ultimate Caretaker (we did it silly, lol) and assistant Rita Rosado (the effervescent researcher!). Thanks guys for making this Maiden voyage a memorable one indeed. Our aim is to earnestly and creatively provide you (our brothers & sisters) an opportunity to share with others, memories of what it was like being a Homekid. So we encourage all that fondly seek to share in this legacy of our beloved St. Agatha Home, to do so by way of sending us your story. Only with YOU can we continue to sustain a meaningful alliance through this proverbial vein of lasting brotherhood. Allow us to be your voice! Just thought I’d share in some Easter Love with my dear family and friends. Easter just wouldn’t be the same without us reflecting back on what this period in history truly represents. A religious feast honoring the resurrection of Jesus Christ the Lord our God, for whom out of goodness, surrendered all sin through the depths of crucifixion, only to be risen in triumphal Glory three days after. So for the occasion, here are four stanzas or verses taken from one of my favorites hymns. Embrace his glory and his mercy shall be bestowed upon you. Happy Easter To All... Christ the Lord is risen today, Alleluia! Sons of men and angels say, Alleluia! Raise your joys and triumphs high, Alleluia! Sing, ye heav’ns, and earth, reply, Alleluia! Lives again our glorious King, Alleluia! Where, O death, is now thy sting? Alleluia! Once He died our souls to save, Alleluia! Where thy victory, O grave? Alleluia! Hail, the Lord of earth and Heaven, Alleluia! Praise to Thee by both be given, Alleluia! Thee we greet triumphant now, Alleluia! Hail, the resurrection, thou, Alleluia!Jesus Christ is risen today, Alleluia! Our triumphant holy day, Alleluia! Who did once upon the cross, Alleluia! Suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia! Good Day my fellow mates, hope all is well and manageable. I would like to take this moment in inviting you all to a premiere viewing of the St. Agatha “Literary Wall of Reflection”. We anticipate it being up and running in the very near future. A more definitive opening date will be posted once we have it finalized. The theme behind the site’s concept is fashioned as being a SA “virtual exhibition” and yet another extension in sharing childhood memories and experiences with those of us who lived it. With the incredible guidance and assistance of dear friend and Home sisters Maria Agosto & Rita Rosado, united we are able to make vocal a “virtual voice” of Homekids near, dear and afar. This unique platform for literary expression will allow one the opportunity to contribute and/or view writings of notable pastime reflection. So please feel free to stop by and view what fellow alumni have to share. There will also be a photo-invite preview on display here at the SA website as well. This should give you some idea of what we have in store. Please take the time to share in this SA reflective, you’ll be glad you did! For more info, please visit Maria’s Aga.Links blog dated 3-28-09.
