my great aunt, Josephine McConnell, was a Catholic nun and took the name of Sister Concettina (sp). She was my mother's aunt on her father's side. I only know her through family stories and that included her working at St Agatha's which is where she too, is buried. I did meet her once when she visited my mother in Elizabeth, NJ. I believe at that time, the nuns were not allowed to visit family. I was about 6 years old in 1947/48 and recall the secretive nature of the visit. I have no photo of her and would love to have one. I would like to find out more about her if anyone had her as a teacher or knew her please email me at JRiehl@aol.com. I was just look to get some info on my past and stumbled across this website but when I got here I felt compelled to stay. Those pictures of the cottages & schools being knocked down almost brought me tears. So I could only imagine how some of the rest of you feel. being a city girl moving up to Rockland county changed my whole way of thinking. This is devasating. Update to previous message. I checked the 1930 census on the St Agatha site, my father is listed on page 1B line 98. His last name is misspelled as Bruner, in reality the last name is Brewer, Morris age 10. In the official copy of the census listed on Ancestry.com the name Brewer is discernable. My father, Morris V (Vince)Brewer, was a resident at St Agatha's from around 1925 (6 years of age) until the age of 18. I found him listed there in the 1930 census, no background info on his parents listed. If there is anyone who knew him during those years, or has any information about his time at St. Agatha's, it would be greatly appreciated. or those of you who think St. Agatha is dead and gone, it is not. St. Agatha as we experienced it, is changed. But the spirit is still living for those who live on at Duryea Lane, who look out over the same scenes we looked out over. If you visit the cemetery, you wouldn’t know anything had changed down below. Likewise, from St. Patrick’s Villa corner (at Duryea and Convent). I think of it like my childhood in general: My hands and feet are bigger, so is my brain and heart. But I’m that same person, just bigger, wiser, smarter (hopefully). Same is true for you. We’ve all been changed a bit by our experiences, but much in us remains the same. That’s true for St. Agatha, the grass above ground is different but the roots are the same. There are still apple trees on the grounds bearing fruit, where little boys of the Depression climbed trees to snitch one. The stone wall was put up in the late 1880’s by home kids, and it remains, though they have passed on. St. Agatha is the spirit of all of those who went before, you, me, all those children for over 100 years, the Sisters, the Priests, everyone who touched it and left some of their spirit. rom Maria Agosto: My Dear Agatha Family: Last evening my 25-year wish came true: I heard the sweet and tender voice of my beloved hero, Fr. Oliverio. He was having a good day and actually remembered me, asked questions about my brothers, how many children and grandchildren I had and called me by name! I had recently sent him and his sister, Esther my copy of Nancy Canfield's book "Homekids" and whether that helped trigger his memories or not I do not know, but it certainly gave him something tangible to both touch and read. He can only read a little at a time because he falls asleep, but I believe he has a little something to look forward to every day now and I'm convinced he'll finish that book in no time. (Thank you, Nancy!) All I know is that he named all the cottages - Loyola, DePaul, Seton Hall, etc. and asked if it was true the Home and the house he once lived in had been taken down. I told him, "Yes, Father, but now there will be a large park for children to play." He said to please come see him so he can "say Mass for us kids." I reassured him he would see a group of us in December, so PLEASE send those cards so I can bring him a large bag full of mail. Hello HOME KIDS. Olga did you know Mt. Carmel still stands and is fully functional? I went inside after 32 years, and what a Flash Back to the Past it was. The neighboring people have many pictures of Mt. Carmel. I remembered that it was more larger and some changes have been made to the bldg. If any one has more pics let's share them. To the members of this site who posted up the pictures of my brothers at St. A's, thank you so much! I was able to save them to my computer and print them out for myself. I cannot tell you how much this has meant to me. Also, I was glad to see the picture of the cottage that I lived in while I was at St. A's (Mt. Carmel). I could not go to the reunion because, in all honesty, I want to remember my childhood life the way it was. It is not the same knowing my home has been destroyed. Hey Leonard, thanks for the update on Jim, wondered why he didn’t show up at reunion after previously speaking with him for what seemed like hours. I really missed his humble presence and yes I will certainly give him a call. So you were a youngster at Lakeside eh? You guys along with St. Agnes, St. Dominic’s and Pius always seemed to give us a good run on the hardwood, back in the day. Do you remember brothers Billy and Raymond Brooks?. How about Cleveland Little (I believe that was his name). Don’t know if he was a Lakeside kid, but I do recall Felix Del Valle (R.I.P.) and I doing battle against him (Spring Valley vs. Nanuet) during my HS basketball tenure. One year they had Billy Brooks at guard, George Johnson at forward (what a smooth talent) and Cleveland (6ft.7 or better) at center. Think Spring Valley or North Rockland was crowned county champs that same season. Ran into Armando C. in the Bronx late 90’s, seemed to be doing ok, Tony, haven’t a clue. Also ran into Lavonne Reynolds (the late Ralph Green’s ex), looked and sounded as lovely as ever. Please give my regards to your wife Celia, take care! Although I did not grow up at St.Agatha's, this place holds a special place in my heart. My mom Mignonette Thompson (Betty)grew up there. She took me there, to Mount Carmel & to Mount Saint Vincent on the Hudson. Every year we went up to St. Agatha's and until I was about 15 I did'nt know why. My dad explained to me that my mom and her sisters (Veronica & Yvonne) grew up there. I remember walking around on the grounds and I have even taken my children to this very special place. Hello All I think about the home often, and would not trade in those memories for anything. I went the Nyack Junior High on the "Small Bus" but graduated from St Agatha's 6th grade. I also started at Nyack High and then ended up going to Nanuet High for a short time. Some of us came when we were young and some came when we were old. I'd have to say that all things. Looking after the little one's in Little Flower; Going to the Pond to collect tadpoles; Playing tag in the trees; collecting stawberries; Spilling our Pea soup; sneaking to take extra ice cream after the kitchen closed; Playing 123 get off my father's apple tree; Playing Witch Witch after dark and hiding on the roof tops; Olympics; Pool; Slegh riding; Sliding down the banister to go to the dinning room; Eating fudge with rice crispies. etc...etc...etc... These are memories that none of us will have had we not been in the home. Memories are what connect people. Because memories stir emotions. In the above memories stir happy memories. Hi Everyone, I was just reading some of the notes recorded on this site. Let me remind anyone who is interested that the next St. Agatha Alumni event is Sunday October 12th, 2008. At the Gymnasium on the old grounds. The day will begin at 10AM with registration & a meet & greet. 11:AM a mass, afterwards a blessing of the saved bell from the church, then a buffet lunch. Afterwards the grounds are available for all to see and at 3:30 we will have a blessing of the site where the bell tower & Bell will reside. At 7:PM an evening dinner & dance in the gymnasium that will end at midnight. I hope you all will decide to come even if this is late notice to some of you. The cost for entry into the event is $30. for alumni & $20 for quest. PS there are a lot of people coming so far, join us, lets make it the Alumni event to remember. Be well Victor Castro
