What are the chances of the Alumni getting together a group of us, set up a booth, and advertise the HOME KIDS book at the June 1st celebration?. Just a thought.

Hello again this is celia . First of all I sincerely want to thank you Nancy Canfield for putting together all of this. I went back to St Agatha's to work with our disabled brothers and sisters and really enjoyed the experience. I find that coming to this website is an extremely emotional experience.I am glad in my heart to know that i can see the names of people of my youth. But on the other hand I feel like crying. I hope i am not bringing anyone down. Now to Teresa Panzella I remember you. We worked together one summer in New City I was taking care of a little boy and you were working in the home of a lady also if my memory serves me well. What a pleasant easy going fun person you were. I hope all is well with you. I am a grandmother of a beautiful two and a half year old boy.I am also hapilly married to a wonderful man who have known since i was 22 years old. I also have a 30 year old son. Please leave a message on the message board I would to hear from you. Before I go on, Nancy your brother David was someone who I took to my heart. He taught me how to play chess and was such a gentleman to be so young. Robert Garcia I most definitely remember your name ...

Hey All, I just wanted to thank Robert for his heads-up on the upcoming event he referenced below. For those of you having trouble locating the website or article, here is a brief summary excerpt as written; St. Agatha's property renovation about 6 weeks from completion. Centennial Celebration: The Nanuet school district is celebrating its 100th year with a parade and gala festival on the grounds of the newly renovated St. Agatha's property. When: June 1. Parade from firehouse up Prospect Street to the property at 10:30 a.m., event ends at 6:30 p.m. Open: Anybody Cost: Free to get in, food vendors available on the grounds, end summary. For those of you willing and able to attend, it should be quite an interesting day to say the least. I’m sure for many, the term “Celebration” understandably undermines the sensitivity of a great loss, and may be somewhat difficult to appreciate or digest. My hope is that this occasion (on location) will not only Celebrate a harvest of new beginnings, but offer a platform that communicates and commemorates the totality of our forever “Hallowed” grounds, St. Agatha!. I hope a worthy representative is speaking on behalf of the whole in preserving the memory of our Home; anything

The article on LoHud.com was a very sad but understandable article. June 1, which is a Sunday, will be the big event. I will call it "The opening of a new era and the Closing of Home Kids". I will do everything in my power to see this event in person. I cannot guarantee I will hold back my tears but I hope there will be others "Home Kids" to share our memories. If I could make it, I will be at the site just remenicing and probably looking like I'm lost.

Hi Nancy! As always, it is great to hear from you ... I can vividly recall "slipping into" Camp Shanks on a Saturday afternoon with another St Agnes' boy to "scavenge" the Army "landfill dump" for anything we thought we'd like to posess. Most of the "dumped" items were personal affects which the Army mandated the overseas-bound soldiers to discard as hindrances to their combat-ready status. We recovered personal items such as electric razors, flashlights, Ronson, and Zippo lighters, chromed and silver-plated cigarette cases, personal size stainless steel shaving mirrors and other items with reflective surfaces which would be banned in battlefield zones. What a fantastic job the Alumni committee is doing to bring about the restoration of the Belltower and the dedication of it in Oct., when we have our reunion at St. Agatha, in the old gym! We're planning to invite all the old nuns, Fr. Oliverio, counselors, and Home Kids from near an far. If you have not joined the alumni yet, please click on Alum Membership, on the front page. If you know someone who is not on the internet, please let me know, so we can make sure they stay up on all that is going on. Thanks so much!

I especially think about those out there who don't write on the web, and those who can't because they don't have access to a computer. If any alumni know anyone who doesn't have access, give them a friendly hand. We all can benefit from each others input. The greatest reunion ever is set for October 11,2008. Everybody needs to come. Please!

T. Pnazella. I also have many memories such as visiting Sundays. I remember how depressing it was when you expected someone to come and visit you every other week. No one would come for months at times. I think the worse part was sitting on the couch in Mt. Carmel all day long waiting for that phone call from central "come down to the main building, your family is here to visit you" by late afternoon after sitting for hours and no phone calls, you knew no one was coming. One of many memories.

obert Ortiz - your name does sound familiar, as does Norma Matos, Celcelia Biscardi & Wayne Monroe. I honestly couldn't put a face to a name though. As I look through the website and see photographs, faces are familiar. It's too bad there isn't a page that has photos of then & now with names attached. I'm sure that would definitely help with the memory lose. I had to laugh when you mentioned that I reminded you of Marlo Thomas. I do remember that being said alot. As a young girl then, I do remember the show and loving it. I remember 6th grade, a teacher named Mr. Minga who had an impact on me.I believe he was an identical twin. Living at St. Agnes, a place with lots of windows, a nun named Sr. Raymond who had a parrot. The girls had taught it to say Sr. Bubble lips ... I believe girls got in trouble for that. I remember the smell of honeysuckles in season and loving it. Friday night movies, talent shows & singing in a few of them. I remember a large pool and being so scared to get in it ... trying to pass the swim test & thinking I was going to drown. I remember visiting Sundays, sitting near the entrance on a bench under something, not an enclosed area. There are other little memories but I can't put th

Comments:
Hello everyone, I love visiting this site, The tidbits & explanations of a time gone by always makes me feel that I'm not alone in the once-in-a-lifetime experience of growing up at St. Agatha's home for children. The present alumni is working hard to complete two very important projects for this year. The first is the completion of the "Bell Tower Project." this project involves finding a place to put the bell tower (a permanent place) and then to refurbish it and secure it in such a way as to make it available to visitors. The second project is to organize the next alumni event that will include a blessing and opening ceremony of the bell tower and a full day of events that will also allow you to see what St. Agatha's Services is doing now since it's closing. What has St. Agatha's become? The day will end with an evening party on the grounds. Now it's real easy to say what we want, but not so easy to do with out help. So anyone living in the New York, New Jersey, area should contact the Alumni association and get involved. We need your participation to make this an event to remember. As it is Saturday March 22nd Easter Eve, let me wish you all a Happy holiday. Please contac me on this.

For those individuals who do remember Jim Dowling, I am sorry for not reporting this information sooner. From my communications with Jane Dowling (his former wife), Jim passed away in 2007. I do not remember Jim at the Home. Nevertheless, I did meet him after leaving the Home through Jane over the years. He was similar to Rudy Polk in my opinion. And for those who do not remember, Jane Dowling was our Drama Teacher for the summer of 66 and 67.

I also remember my first day at St. Agatha, the smell of fresh grass and that strange noise I never heard called Crikets. Does anyone remember an incident with St. Agnes when the Pumpkins were thrown at the windows and doors on a night before Halloween? or the pumpkins that were stolen from one of the Haydens? if you do, email me.

Hello to all of the beautiful home kids of St Agatha. My name is Celia Anita Biscardi Mitchell. It is sooooo wonderful to conncet with you who have have always remained in my heart. My days at St. Agatha were like the days of a spoiled rich kid. I remember the first time I came to Rockland county it was raining and the smell of skunk was in the air. There were horses to ride movies on Friday in the bandroom a great gym a pool that was second to none a farm a drill team The Olmypics skating when the bandroom was decrepit with Tom Maloney. Didn't he have a twin brother? Great staff and kids to play with. What a life! I am greatful to God that I was placed in St. Agatha's. Does any remember the laundry service cooking and sewing classes with Mrs. Landset? How about going away to camp with packs and packs of chewing gum? The Mansion of a house called The Big House. The beautiful lillies that came up around Easter and concord grapes vines apple trees fruit trees. the yellow forcynhtia bushes that bloomed in spring on Convent Road. But most of all I remember that bond that was between the children there were not too many kids who were at odds with each other as far as I

ello my Agatha brothers & sisters: COLORBLIND by Pamela Peak Productions - please contact Nancy Canfield or me for this link - I cannot post it on our Guestbook. This beautiful documentary reminded me SO MUCH of us Homekids that I felt in my heart it was no coincidence that I ran across it. The children in this very personal story were not orphans in a Home like we were, but their young lives were deeply influenced by their teacher Mr. Bell who taught them for three years in grade school (like the nuns and our own Fr. Oliverio & other priests who touched our lives). The turbulent 60’s came and they went their separate ways. Thirty-five years later they have a reunion (very much like the large reunion we had in 2001 and others). Had someone been recording the events that led up to so many of us Homekids getting together after so many years, it would have looked VERY much like this very moving documentary. I contacted Nancy Canfield in the hopes that she will contact Pamela Peak (the producer) and see if that could lead to the telling of our own St. Agatha story via documentary or even a movie. If you get a chance to view it whenever it airs in your area (or you can order it online and see it right a

Today was the first opportunity I had to watch the destruction of the only home I have ever known. My heart was torn apart, but now the healing process can begin. I have memories of the Sisters, as I think the little temper tantrums I would have in order to keep from getting spanked. Sneaking over to the girls side to see my girl friends. and sledding down Scottland Hill with the the councelors and my group. While on leave from the Air Force, Going to the home on Christmas Eve night and having Sister Alexander tell us we were not allowed to attend Midnight Mass or stay in the cottage. My telling Sister, "Well I guess there is no room at the inn." Yes! the home may be physically gone, but together Saint Agatha's Lives on through all the HOME KIDS. Norma or anyone who would like to contact me, my email is (deaconrichard@qop.org)

I just returned from having lunch with some old St Agatha friends. Srs. Eileen, Katherine, Sheila and Sheila F. It was alot of fun talking about the old days. The old days when I was a teenage and like most, sometimes a handful. The running away from the home on one occassion (how dare I as the police officer said who pick us up and brought us back to the cottage, the smoking of cigarettes, the fights amongst all of the kids and all the other mischief. God bless the nuns. I now know how hard it was for them and especially on how to discipline us the right way. It is hard for parents so imagine a cottage nun trying to figure it out! In any event we laughed and I was able to show them that I grew up to be a decent, productive person in society and have been able to maintain a sense of humor throughout all of these years.

I'm happy you enjoyed the book, and hope you will continue to check in on the guestbook for old friends. This is the best part of the web page I think. I have a story in Chicken Soup for the Adopted Soul, coming out in March. In the Appendix, I point people back to Home Kids. Two more Chicken Soup books coming out with stories. Still waiting to hear from Oprah's booklist, but at least her reader has Home Kids for consideration. We're all in this together. Big hugs. Nancy

For all those Patriot fans. You are easy to hate. But it in the books along the story line about New England losing to the METS in the World Series. LOL Maybe Bradley should not have been at his girlfriend's house in NYC prior to the game. I am an Eagles fan and so glad that the BOYS did not win.

Hey John, my name is Ron Lugo; you wouldn’t know me because I arrived at St. Agatha the year you left, at age 2. I’m writing you because I read your latest guestbook entry and saw you were cheering on The New England Patriots. Please accept my condolences for their untimely demise; I was in your shoes about 40 yrs ago when my Johnny Unitas-less Colts were upset by Broadway “Joe” and the NY Jets. grrrr! Your Patriots have somewhat erased that pain & suffering incurred for so many years and can now also be included in “Greatest Super Bowl upset” conversations. They played their hearts out all season long a record 18-0, but they will forever be remembered for the waning moments of Super Bowl XLll, a deGiant, oops sry!, defiant moment in the annals of pro sports!. All in all, it was a great game to watch and nail biting till the end! John. I tried emailing this entry to you after the game but it came back as “address not found” Great to have you aboard along with all the other Brethrens & Sisters! Stay well all! Congrats Giants!

I lived in Savio and 13 Hayden in the mid to late sixties. My councelor was Jim Bryant and my cottage nuns were Sister Noreen and sister James. I would like to say that my time at St Agatha was and will always be my most precious and memorable times in my life. When I look back it almost seems surreal. Though most of came under unfortunate situations, I can't help but feel we were also a chosen and lucky bunch. I remember West Point on Christmas, movies in bandroom, the wonderful home girls from little flower, playing football on the Dark Horses, and Dark Ponies, parades with the drill team, talent showes, camp Ahtaga in 68, Colin Minga, I can go on and on. God Bless all of you.

St Agatha's home is special to me because both of my parents (and all of their siblings lived there during the late 20's and 30's). As a matter of fact not only my father grew up there, but later in years my mother remarried a HOME KID> See pages 221-222 of Nancy's book for more info. Quite a story...should be a movie someday. Thanks for your efforts Happy New Year. Jane MCGuigan (Catherine Carmody and Tony Delaney's daughter.)Two HOME KIDS

Ron, you're welcome - I just wanted to share my eyes with those Homekids who live out of state or don't have the time or opportunity to visit St. Agatha. It's sad to see our Home slowly going away and it's ok to grieve our loss as well; for many of us it was the only home we knew. My youngest brother Rudy arrived at the Home in diapers and left as a teenager - a similar story many of us share. Now it's a time to reflect and give thanks for what we had, what we shared, for the family of hundreds of brothers and sisters we had and still have, and to hold on dearly to all the memories we made at our beautiful St. Agatha. Happy Holidays from our Family to yours. THE AGOSTOS: Maria, Willie, Julio, Wilfredo and Rudy :-)

I just wanted to say, regarding the buildings that came down at St. Agatha, keep in mind, that although those buildings no longer stand, all the memories and energies of when we were there, remain. We can still go and stand in the pavillion on the front lawn, where we received visitors, and smell the sweet spring air, or feel that biting cold wind of winter, and remember. Just like we can remember being a kid, sledding down the band room steps when they froze over, or hear the music coming from the canteen as Pedro Mercado's 45 RPM's played. Can't you hear Tom Maloney shouting commands to his football players on the field? And the choir in the loft at the chapel? Tom is gone, but we still have those memories. I think how the neighbors groaned as each of those buildings went up - "there go the beautiful fields, no more pheasant and deer hunting in those woods now." Things change, but not always for the worse. We are blessed to be able to go back there, to relive only the happy times, and forget the sad ones that brought us there in the first place. Hold on to the good memories, and have a wonderful Christmas! Hugs to you all. Nancy

Maria, excellent job in piecing together and sharing with us all the now torn down sanctuary, once a place called “Home”. I’m sure it was quite the difficult task clicking away while envisioning the structures as they were, the very ones that held so many of us afloat back in the day. One of the more poignant shots of the group and one that struck me most was that of the Bell Tower. Once upon a glory day, as the majestic keeper of the toll, she stood above the rest. Now besiege by time she sits dethroned, seemingly bewildered, abandoned and confused, oblivious to her beheaded counterpart’s fate, as well as her own. Fitting as it may be for the few, never will I forget her reign. I plan a trip up there soon, camera ready, expectations unknown. Hopefully I’ll get to capture more than an imagination. Thanks again Maria for sadly opening my eyes. I say that dearly and sincerely. You and your Family have/are doing a wonderful thing. Continued success & Happy Holidays to you all! PS. Plz say hello to Mari 4 me, thx!

Maldonado's love story after 40 years sounds like that new movie where they waited 50 years to meet again. With the 911 and love story, this would be an excellent story to tell. My opinion.

I have just visited a "home brother" RONALD LUGO in North Carolina. We re-connected with each other since the mide 1970's. We used to play b-ball in the gym and the courtyard. And so that was our connection. We remembered and we went our own ways. And now they intersected. We are 23 years older and still can communicate and can talk about our past with pride and some sorrow. At least on my part. But we have survived and have good lives. Lives that we can share with others that may be so different from us. Ron, is a special guy. Someone that grew up in the home when he was so very young until his teen ager years. It was his home. Everyone was his family. There seems to b no bitterness. Ron, carried what he learned from the home to his personal life. I wish him alot of continued success. Succuss in his emotional life and with his lovely and newly wife Monica. Ron has a lot to give to all of us. Marta

FOR EVERYTHING YOU DO TO KEEP US TOGETHER. A SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR WEBMASTER, PETE!!! I'm guilty of not having joined the Assoc. yet, BUT I will soon!!! :-)

My neighborhood lost 135 homes, as close as 3 blocks away, but we only had ash and wind damage, though, the fires were terrifying. In Rancho Bernardo, we lost 300 homes, and countywide, 1500. We had to evacuate to Qualcomm Stadium about 35 miles away, with our 6 mos old grand babies - but they took good care of us. Now, the community is trying to help each other stabilize, and rebuild. It's wonderful to be a part of. I wish the katrina victims could have had this experience. Thank you for your concern.

Went back to visit 10/20/07 (was in Pearl River for the 50th high school reunion) St.Agathas was not easy to find,so many changes over the years. It was very difficult for my sister to see the changes. Found the dedication plaque on the Little Flower house interesting Sr. Mary Ulrica O'Reilly was the first Sr. there. We took many pictures and spoke to one of the Srs from the Villa. One of the girls from the "Hill" also attended the reunion..we were both from the 50's

Hello everyone. I'm sorry for not keeping in touch. I haven't had an internet connection for a while and I am raising 2 4year old grandchildren that keep me too busy to go to the library on the computer. I remember so many people and so many things about the home that I just love to see everyone is in contact. I think for the most part we all did very well. We became people who, although when we were children we may have thought we were missing out on things, have now realized life wasn't so bad after all. Love Ya!

Hello again HOME KIDS. It was very emotional to hear how clear the grounds are getting at St. Agatha. I would appreciate if someone could get me a small momentum from DePaul when they start demolishing it (Brick) or so. Like most of us I don't know if I could go to ST. Agatha and not become emotional when I could see clear across to Duryea. All the sories and memories have to be put somewhere for historical reasons. Someone out there surely could help us do this. You all take care. I plan to visit the Home very soon.

Hi all, this is a continuation of my last note about our visit... We both left there blessed for having known St. Agatha's as our home. Today, I understand change as a constant force that I cannot control. I can however have power over how I feel about it. I'm happy to have gone there with my brother sharing the experience with him was well worth the trip. I hope all of you are managing your feelings around this change with courage & hope that the property will be used to better other childrens lives as it did for us all. Be well Victor

Hello every one, my brother (freedom & I) visited St. Agatha's this Sunday 10.21.07 to continue documenting the changes at the site know to us all as the "Home". The church, the bandroom, the water tower, the big smoke stack, Gonzaga, Savio, ETC are all gone. The only buildings remaining are the Haydens 11-15 and the "Turning Point" program which is housed in a non numbered building. Depaul is still up because there are still clients living in the building awaiting their move to the refurbished Duryea Lane cottages 71,72,73,& 74. It looks like 75 has had no work on it, but they may have a different design for it. Anyway, the pool is gone, looks like there never was anything there. If you stand at the front gate entrance you can see clear up to the Duryea Lane cottages. The bell tower still sits infront of the little flower house awaiting it's move. We ended our visit and photography with a hike into the wooded trail that began a the back entrance of the pool. When we were there we knew it as the "Dump". With everything level and no buildings to obstruct the view, the St. Agatha property looks so small. The time spent there brought many feelings but we left having felt blessed to have know

I want to thank everyone for this website. It is wonderful to hear from everyone and to hear that they are doing so well. It amazes me that there are home kids before I was born and that they are still living and have had productive lives. We all have something in common and that is St A. We have a lot of memories and when we think back to all of them they have shaped our exitence and what we are today. We can share all of this with our family and sigficant others. We are survivors.

I only became aware of the website this week. Sorry I missed all of the reunions over the years. The blessings of this technology allows many of us a chance to keep in touch. It has been more that 50 years since the time my sisters and I spent at St. Agatha's. I remember many events but not many names. I do recall getting into a bit of trouble now and again. I remember those times most of all. I did visit the grounds several times over the years just to look around. I remember a lady named Kay Welsh that helped out at the dorm during those years. After my sisters Patricia 7 yrs, Lillian 13 yrs. and I. 8 yrs old (in 1952) left in 1955, Kay Welsh took Patricia and I to St. Agatha's in 1957 to visit with the kids and Sisters we had known. I have group picture of all of us in the yard behind the dorm bldg. I remember Sister Patricia Marian was my dorm room leader. I look forward to communicating with those who share memories of that time together.

Hi Everyone, been a while!.I must say I’m quite happily surprised to see the growing number of new entrees in our Guestbook. It leads me to believe there are still those of us out there with a yearning desire to reconnect and/or identify with a time long past.I’m sure for some there will always remain an *asterisk*, a-void if you will, to closure… Certainly for me, it’s been an ongoing purpose to satisfy an affection! Who really knows? I just want to thank you all for sharing a bit of your thoughts and reflections. It’s those thoughts and memories that reaffirm our existence. Welcome all to St. Agatha’s fraternity, our Community, our family, our legacy!...May His Spirit Touch You When You Least Expect And Provide You the Sight To See His Coming!... Thanks again Peter!
