My sisters (Rosemary & Patricia) were at the home during this time period. I was entering High School and went to Pearl River, I am attending the 50th reunion of the school being held in Nanuet 10/19-21/07. My sisters were in elementary school but I took the bus to school every day (after walking to the bottom of the hill. I have a booklet we girls on the hill created with illustrations. Sr. Anysia was our leader (that poor woman, I gave her such a hard time)I have many good memories and wish I found this website sooner. When my sister and I visit next week it seems as if it will be all gone. I would love to hear from anyone on the hill during that time period. I received this message, anyone remember this Home Kid? Thanks, Nancy Canfield. My mother was at St. Agatha’s from 1938 when she was 5 years old until 1950 when she met and married my father. Her maiden name was Beverly Schimmel and was there with her younger brother Doug and sister Jackie. Message Number: 97 - Sunday, October 7, 2007 13:39:18 EDT

Hello everyone. It's been awhile since I singed in. I got promoted to Parent Training Manager at a large school district in Dallas TX. I train parents in getting involved in their child's education. I was wonderning if anyone has any video tape of the reconstruction at St.Agatha or maybe a memorabilia such as someone said they picked up a brick from one of the cottage. Hello everybody: It's 930pm on sunday. I'm ready for bed, but wanted to say something to my brothers and sisters from the home, before my sleep. After reading and hearing about the destruction of our home, I can't help feeling a deep sence of loss. I wish something could have been done to prevent such a horrible event... I think all of us were cought off guard. Much thanks to Nancy Canfield, Peter Feliciano, Victor Castro, Ronald Lugo and all of the Saint Agatha Home alumni for keeping this dream alive. Saint Agatha will be a part of us all forever, and alive forever, because WE ARE SAINT AGATHAS. God bless all of you! Message Number: 88 - Sunday, September 23, 2007 20:26:56 EDT
I AM NOT COMPLETELY SURE OF THE YEARS, THE ONLY ONE I REMEMBER WAS NAMED NORMA RODRIQUEZ. WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM HER, ALSO ANYONE WHO REMEMBERS SISTER LEO. SHE WAS DEFINITELY A SAINT. Sr Katherine King, I do remember you and I back-channeled you some mail. You were a tough, stern woman who took great interest in the children's well-being and staff's appropriate training. I think God has blessed you with such knowledge and kindness to help many children fly right, and some staff to continue flying, to fulfill dreams. My hat's off to you for such a work, which could not have been completed w/o G-d. Ken Adams Message Number: 86 - Thursday, September 20, 2007 11:34:39 EDT

To all my Agatha brothers & sisters: I visited the St. Agatha grounds this past weekend and yes, demolition has begun. The bandroom, yard, handball court, father's house, the white wall are no more. I remembered all of you as I walked the grounds and snapped photos - what a special place we had! and how fortunate we were to have lived there. Thanks to Victor for the DVD's he made of the grounds - can't wait to see them. Take care, Homekids. :-) Message Number: 84 - Tuesday, September 18, 2007 11:04:02 EDT

A Subtly Reminder...Today(9/11)marks the six year anniversary of an American historic tragedy. One that will undoubtedly live well beyond the realm of infamy. Gone are the surrealistic comforts of freedom we as Americans treasured and were so complacently accustomed to... Gone are the innocent lives, said freedom accrued. In walked a rude awakening, leaving us all too aware of how defiant hatred’s Martyrs are willing to scour. Hatred is futile on Gods shore. May it abandon all coasts, and harbor no more!... Epilogue: If there’s a lesson to be learned may I make gesture that we guard ourselves not from the injustice of evil, but against the tolerance of those who seek to preserve it! - RL - In memory of the lives touched on 9/11: 6 yrs afar, and forever we weep! When I first published Home Kids, I had a request from a Jose Perez, with a check, and when I went to post it to him, I found that in my eagerness, I sent the check on to the NY Foundling, without copying down his address. I've had this book inscribed, packaged, and ready to send to him ever since, but no address. Can anyone help me out? Thank you all for making this website, and network with friends and family, such a huge success. Especially to David and Peter Feliciano. Message Number: 79 - Monday, September 3, 2007 13:51:19 EDT
Hello everyone who lived at St Agatha's. It is so great to have a site that we are able to comunicate with each other. Today we are in a world that families friend our children are scattered all over not by choice. I'm from NYC and I never dreamed that I would be living in another state other than my hometown. I was an orphan when my father put my brothers and me in the home. When we are kids we love our families but while we are growing up so many friends come into our lives and we love them (I do). I never forgot my home friends. I wish I had stayed longer. Thank God I have found a few and so happy to know we are still around. I wish we didn't live so far away. I'm glad that I have a computer and we E-M each other. My first contact was Nancy Canfield she was not at the home the same yr but I was so happy to know I found someone from St Agatha it felt I had found my sister and she was so nice to E-M me and help me that I started to search the web and find more information that has help me to comunicate with some of my friends and I hope I find more. I wish we heard more from the yr 1949. We would like to see more pictures. If I had a scanner I would send my pictures. I'm planning to get one. I only have one pic Message Number: 78 - Friday, August 31, 2007 18:41:18 EDT
lmost September, and recalling events at St. Agatha's. Any of the girls at the home during the 1948 snowstorm? We ate all the candy we could find, and used everyone's toys or skates or sleds that were given by the telephone Co's generous folks. We were mad that we couldn't stay in the city over Christmas, but a day or so later the storm hit! We thought we'd died and went to heaven. There were times in the summer that we had great visits to Bear Mountain, and sometimes we went (without permission) past the chicken house, and pig pens, into the woods nearby to see the old, unused swimming pool. I liked the days when we all sat around before lunch, picking the ends off string beans, endless baskets of them!....My brother often talked of the boys he was friends with, he loved the home, as did I. We were orphans......It would be nice to hear from folks who remember Martha Way, Lydia Rodreguiz,Barbara Dowling,Nancy McManus. There are so many that I have not thought of in years. I never thought that such a thing as the internet would exist whereby I could find my former siblings. So sad that I did not write things down. I never thought it was important........or that I would forget......... I would like to hear from Message Number: 77 - Friday, August 31, 2007 14:36:57 EDT
Joseph and Frances those words of inspirations really touched my heart. Thank you. I look at the people that sign the Guest Book and realize that most of us have not even meet each other but yet know how we think. I spoke to Victor over the phone and somehow we connected right off the bat. "You had to be a Home Kid" to really appriciate what I'm getting at. Home Kids could be all over the world and yet share one common sense of appreiciating of life and caring for others. I am now the manager of Parant Training at a very large school district in Texas. I deal with parents getting involve in their child's education. How ironic things turn out. I hope that maybe someone out there recognizes St.Agatha and the Home Kids and do a documentary or miniseries. Never stop Hoping. Message Number: 76 - Wednesday, August 29, 2007 22:24:30 EDT
This is a great site and I thank all of you that have made it possible and keep it up to date. I also have nostalgic feelings about St. Agatha, and am happy that I was able to grow there. I remember my St. Agatha "brothers and sisters" with fondness. I am now a "Mercado" as many of you know that Rafael "Ralphie" Mercado, also formerly of St. Agatha's and I were married on July 4th, 2002. We lost my sister Myrna Maldonado on 9/11 in the World Trade Center disaster and how ironic it was that she finally attended a reunion that year and saw all her St. Agatha friends. I will always have the memories of how beautiful the St. Agatha grounds were and remember the "Day Camp", the Canteen, the chapel, picking strawberries and sitting on the wall and the bandroom steps, the handball courts and the pool and best of all the sleighing on the hill by the pool area and Fr. Oliverio piling us all on 1 sled and insisting we were not to fall. It brings a smile to my face and a tear to my eyes. Best Regards! Message Number: 75 - Wednesday, August 29, 2007 12:17:38 EDT
he Final Reunion In pondering the pros and cons on whether to attend what might be the final reunion of our former home on October 15, 2005, I needed to look up the word “reunion”. Reunion is defined as a gathering of the members of a group who have been separated. We were brought together not by choice. We lived together not by choice. Then we were scattered not by choice. And now the place we called our temporary home is no more. Yet, some of us like migratory birds choose to return to the place that for most of us holds mixed memories. To relive those faded events that no longer holds true to the actual experiences. And yet, we return from year to year to recall those very memories. We greet each other only after quickly glancing over the assigned name tab. We do this to assure ourselves that we were and will continue to be friends. Like the name tags that were sewed to our clothes. So we could separate them. Once they were returned from the main laundry room. What hurts about reunions are those who do not attend. For whatever reasons that prevent them from attending, they continue to be missed by us who will call them friends and those we will continue to love and admire from afar. Hello everyone. Today is monday August 27th 2007. I just returned from The grounds at St. Agatha's. As you know the facility is in de-construction and you probably fiquired out by now I have been photo/video documenting the ending of a place we all know very well. I'm struggle with making these photo's available to you all, they come with a lot of emotions. I know there are those that would prefer to remember the place as it was for them when they left and then there are a few of us that know things change nothing remains the same. So if you would like to have copies contact me at my e-mail address. While I was taking these photo's I meet another alumni up from michigan on business he was there to also take photo's we did it together. His name is Micheal Rudy anyone remember him? He ws there before me. Be well and keep up the dialog. Victor Message Number: 69 - Monday, August 27, 2007 14:09:33 EDT
I remember the Friday Flicks. Does anyone have that video that was done by one of our guests here? I still cannot down load it. I cut my left thigh on the piano hinge on the band room. Message Number: 68 - Friday, August 24, 2007 11:00:38 EDT
Hey All, yes Nelsi I recall how fizzies would discolor ones tongue, just can’t seem to recall who broke into the Canteen to get'em (lol). Hope you enjoyed those pics as much as I enjoyed taking them. Does anyone remember those Friday night Flicks in the band room?. Of course I’m referring to those who actually watch the movie, not the ones lip-locked with whoever occupied the adjacent seat! I remember watching a lot of Hercules, Sinbad, and movies of that nature. Who also remembers getting up early Saturday to watch the old classic NFL/College football films?. I believe Jim Bryant showed them either in the Bandroom, Savio, or the old Gonziga building, I’m not really sure. For you older cats, do you remember when the Bandroom was a gym? Prior to it’s renovation in the 60’s you could still see the outline of the basketball court… “Ah Be still my wretched heart, for I still remember when!”... Howdi Home Kids, Ronald Lugo, thanks for the pic's you gave my brother Charlie, from the 2005 reunion. I've wanted to thank you all this time. About your trivia, I'm sure at the canteen they used to sell Sugar Daddy's. But what I wanted to recall to those that remember was the Fizzies we used to eat at the elementary school yard. Someone would get in the area where it was stored and hand them out, so we all had purple tongues. lol thanks victor for the work your doing. God bless all! Does anyone remember my brother Charlie Salmon? He was still at the "Home" when I was transferred to Sparkill in 1951. During my time at St. Agatha we rarelly mingle with anyone that was not in our class, so I didn't get to know my brother other than he was my brother. I haven't seen him since I left. Hey All, I just finished viewing the St. Agatha Bell dismantling and must say I was very impressed with Victor’s piece. In this brief photo documentary I was left feeling contrarily beside myself … My initial thought was that seeing the destruction in the midst of the work being done would leave a bitter insensitive reside within. Instead, I saw this timeless relic being carefully escorted from it’s thrown in transition to be admired, preserved and remembered forever more. I’m sure the effects(audio soundtrack & photo sequence)as well as the sensitivity in which Victor chose to describe this project had a lot to do with putting me at ease. Still in all, just knowing that I can go back “Home” and feel a reminisce of the Bell’s symbolic gesture, is a tone worth tolling! Message Number: 62 - Tuesday, August 14, 2007 14:06:24 EDT

Hello everyone, I'm so glad people are using this site regularly. I will make it a habit to visit it as often as I can. There have been some great suggestions lately and please don't think they will be ignored. As the acting president of our alumni association I want to remind people that it is out of respect for the other people I work with to get with them and discuss these ideas before they are inacted. So, I ask you, to be patient with the process. In the mean time let me remind people that the alumni is actively working on projects now. We always need your help and the way you can help is by keeping in touch and donating to the Bell Tower Project and or pay your dues and become an active member of your alumni association. you can contact Sandy Santana Jr., at musicologist@aol.com our present secretary or Nydia, the present treasurer at supermima@optonline.net or myself at ngejungyellow@yahoo.com Thank you and blessings to all you love See you soon Victor Message Number: 59 - Monday, August 13, 2007 22:20:02 EDT

Gentle People: It does the heart good to learn that through time and distance, some of us continue to hold 135 Convent Road among our dearest memories. In the summer of 62, DePaul cottage became my home. Sister Kevin was in charge of the cottage and Rudy Polk changed my view of life. When I left in the summer of 68, Seton Hall was my home and Sister Alexander I consider a friend. Nellie (1954 - 1969) and I married in 1970. Although we produced a beautiful and wonderful daugther, Danalyn, we parted company in 1979. Nevertheless, we remain to the present date friends. Hello to everyone. I'm sorry to say that I'm still piecing together my experience at St. Agatha's. There was so much. I was there for a very long period of time. Most of my memories are good ones. But I seem to remember more when I talk with those I grew up with, so please keep in touch. My last experience with St. Agatha's is being sent to the Soundview & Lacomb Group home in the South Bronx. I want you to know I have taken video footage of the bell tower removal from the church Tuesday August 7th 2007 of this week. I also took photo's. I've made a slide show DVD of the photo's. I Call it " The Bell Tower Project" if you are interested in obtaining a copy please contact me at my e-mail address, posted here on this site. I also had the priviledge of working with Ronald Lugo, Freedom A. (Jose) Carrion to create the slide show DVD " St. Agatha Home, Home No More" that was given as a gift from the alumni to the people who attended the most recent alumni party in Park Ridge NJ. I check my e-mail twice a day so please feel free to leave me a message or ask questions. I will repond. Emptyness fills you with space. VC Message Number: 51 - Wednesday, August 8, 2007 22:29:55 EDT

The Bell. A significant of what was pure, life touching, and memories that when it rang it meant so much to so many from the past, present and future. Like the Liberty Bell of Freedom. This Bell signifies to many of us whom once were called inmates the deliverence of our past lives and the sense of being loved by people who were not our guardians but cared enough to guide us in a path of sharing and caring for others and show what the word love meant, and passing it on to our families. Remeber; Children don't care what you know until they know that you care. Message Number: 49 - Sunday, August 5, 2007 17:24:08 EDT

Well isn't this great!.I just now saw the flash bullentin regarding the preservation and face-lift of our legendary Gym.I can still remember going & coming from Mrs. Roth's kindergarden class in Sacred Heart((early 60's), watching in amazement the bulldozers & tractors prepping the ground-work for the Gym's foundation... Anybody here remember Mr. Keysler the Gym teacher?... Touche! for all those responsible for this historic preservation. Ya think we'll be able to sneak in a game of Dodgeball...lol! Does anyone remember Saint Josephs cottage? When my siblings an I arrived at the home in early 1962, I remember hearing so much about this cottage that burned down. There was a large group of boys that escaped that fire and were resettled in various cottages in the home. Does anyone remember the boys from Saint Josephs? I think Gerrard Richardson and Thomas Provenzano were from Saint Josephs. Perhaps someone will fill us in on the details... Message Number: 44 - Monday, July 23, 2007 16:43:23 EDT
Hello everyone. Some asked for my full name Robert Garcia, family of Jose Garcia, Willie garcia, Zoraida Garcia and Maritza Garcia, I also have causind who were also in St. Agatha sometime between 65-70 Carmen Rivera, Edwin Rivera and Nereida Rivera. We all have so much to share, like someone put it. No one knows what HOME KIDS are unless you spend time there. I need to share all of what was good and bad of St. Agatha. I could honesly say they were not bad but, something different for those of us who had no structure in our lives and the Home Nun's showed us that there was such a thing as structure in small kids lives. Something many of us did not experience until St. Agatha. I have so much to say but in time I am writing it all down and do want to share with all of the HOME KIDS for ever as one. Let us not forget. Isaw someone said Rich Royster as a conselor he was also my counselor. Is he still alive? Message Number: 43 - Monday, July 23, 2007 11:00:41 EDT
Hey All,...Now that I'm officially in, I'd like to finish up where I left off from my last entry... "a place in which many of us derive... I believe it (Nacy's book " Home Kids")to be an enlightening reference based on many relative/relevant facts" ... Best wishes and guidance to you all!... Your brethren, Ron Message Number: 42 - Sunday, July 22, 2007 14:15:30 EDT
Hi All, I pretty much remember many of those whose stay at St. Agatha was between the years 1960 thru 74. Some fairly by name, others vaguely by face and a few that I still communicate with… Isn't this great!!!... To have a forum where we can congregate and re-connect with many lost but not altogether forgotten souls is a blessing... A "Time Capsule" if you will, with endless storylines that for me harbor vivid embodied emotions... If you are reading this today, you're not only a survivor but a true testament of the will it takes to persevere... God Bless! I'm just (for the 1st time) signing in... I can't wait to read all of our guestbook comrade’s names and comments... I'd like to thanks those responsible for putting this site together… In light of the current/foreseen status (demolition and park reconstruction) of the grounds we once called home, this website can be a “Virtual Haven” for years on end… I also would like to give a special thanks to Nancy Canfield for her sincere efforts in keeping our memory alive!... If you haven't gotten a copy of her book (Home Kids) it’s a must!... Whether or not it relates to your story, it however does reflect and preserve a chronological timeline of a place Message Number: 41 - Friday, July 13, 2007 22:14:37 EDT

Thank You, your brother and Nancy for the website, especially now that demolition has begun at The Home. Victor Castro is in the process of documenting in photographs the demolition of St.Agatha. He and Ronald Lugo along with his brother Freedom have taken over 1000 photos. Victor would like to create a virtual museum to place all the photos so others could reflect on them.Maybe you could add a link to view the photos on the website. If you require more info contact me or Victor Castro. Yesterday, a woman posted looking for her father, and his family. I put her in touch with her uncle who is in the book, Home Kids, and has loads of photos on the website. He called her, and reunited her with their long lost family. Sadly, her father passed away some years ago, but she did find a whole bunch of new Kin. That's not the first time for that type of reunion. So every little bit helps. That's why I'm sooooooo appreciative to our webmasters Peter and his brother David Feliciano! Do you have a reunion story to post - friend, family? Message Number: 29 - Saturday, June 23, 2007 01:56:58 EDT
Hello everyone, I feel so lucky to be able to reach out to all of my extensive family from "the home". I don't know about you, but I feel i am missing something in my life. Since I left the home, so much has happened to me (and to all of you as well!)and I've done a lot. But I feel the need to come back to my family. Nobody can understand us and reach into our very souls like other home kids. For me there is Hector Medina, Juan Ramos, Eddie Miranda, Dennis Rivera, Sonny Cutone, The Cruz Family and many many others. In short, I'm looking foward to seeing everyone again at the next reunion Message Number: 28 - Friday, June 22, 2007 09:41:20 EDT

Cheers everyone! It's great to be alive and well. Fond memories of St Agatha and good times classmates; we all graduated in 1944. In those days, the graduating boys were sent to St Agnes Home in Sparkill and walked to Tappan Zee High School in Piermont. It was there that we got our first sense of "freedom"; going out to a publoc school. Although I started at TZHS in 1944 and was in the Class of '48, I was only there during my freshman year before being sent to New York City. Some of my St Agatha classmates were Louis Kee (whose dad had a Chinese restaurant in Jamaica, Queens which I had visited several times); John Lehman; Hugh McAvenu; Tom Quinn; Hennessy; Masterson; Malachy Murphy, who later served with the Marines at the Chosen Reservior massacre in Korea; also, Patrick McHugh and others whose names do not come to mind immediately. If any of you septagenarians happen upon these comments, I'd enjoy hearing of you. "Wagon Wheels" Message Number: 26 - Wednesday, June 20, 2007 18:54:36 EDT

Reminder: I am willing to share any of my stories with anyone who would like to publish a book. I always thought that they should make a mini-series about St. Agatha. Also, I manage to get vital information about me at St. Agatha that I did not know. I got many records about my physchological reports that were done, I believe to all of the children during their stay at St. Agatha. I even got a picture of me that they took during Intake processing. I read my reports from the doctors and it all made sense of the way I am know. I recommend that you all get a copy of your records. Contact the office at St. Agatha or in New York. It really explained alot of things I did not understand and how and why I got to St. Agatha. Good luck. I would like to thank Peter and David Feliciano for their wonderful work with the Guest Book. So far, I have found Helen Rivera, who was at St. Agatha's about the same time I was. Because of this site, we found each other and have maintained communication even though she lives in Florida and I live in Puerto Rico. It would really be great to find other members of St. Agatha during the years 1947 thru 1953. Thanks again for an excellent job!!!! Message Number: 16 - Tuesday, June 12, 2007 12:14:31 EDT
I have visited your site several times - my mother and her three sisters were residents of St. Agatha's from the time of their mother's death in 1927. My mother was a wonderful, wonderful woman! She told us many stories of her years at St. Agatha's...some stories made us laugh and some made our hearts ache. My mother and her sisters were always rather reticent about talking too much about their childhood and since they have all passed away, information is rather sketchy! I would love to hear from anyone who might remember my mother - or her sisters. They were the "Jones Girls"...Veronica (b. 1916 or 1917)died at St. Agatha's when she was only 16. My mother was Rose Jones(b. 1918)and her sisters were Marie(b. 1923)and Ruth (b.1921 or 1922)Jones. I realize anyone who knew them would be quite elderly now, but perhaps there are children or grandchildren who might have heard about my mother and her sisters. Any and all information would be helpful. Thanks so much. Your site is wonderful. Jayne Simon Message Number: 15 - Sunday, June 10, 2007 21:11:34 EDT

I check in often, to see new entries. Often times some thing touches my heart. I just finished reading the entry by Mr. Wagner, He wrote a long comment about his memories. Even though in my time there, things were a bit different I was transported to some of those areas that I recognized as he wrote about them. He's in his seventies and his memories are so vivid to him. Memories are forever. They are a time in our minds that help us keep going. Thanks to the people that were there to help provide us with these memories, Jesus provided them for us. All part of his great plan. Thank you! Thanks Peter and Nancy for your work for us. love Nelsi Message Number: 3 - Wednesday, April 18, 2007 08:45:50 EDT
